How do you know if the cotton fabric you are buying either in a store or online is just plain cotton fabric or quilters weight cotton fabric?

And am I right in assuming that quilters weight cotton is higher priced and wrinkles less than normal cotton fabric? So it would be good for little girls skirts and dresses too because it would need less ironing--correct? If that is correct, what is on the bolt of fabric or online that tells me it is good quality and less wrinkly?

I have other home dec/craft patterns that call for quilters weight cotton but I just don't know how to tell. Thanks for any info provided.

Thank you Lord for my Mother who taught me the joy of sewing.

The main differences in my mind are
1. the pattern on the fabric. Some just scream quilt, others make wonderful clothes.
2. the weight/fineness of weave. Shirting cottons are usually a finer weave and have more drape. Quilting cottons are a bit larger weave (easier to quilt through) and at least before washing, are stiffer.

As far as ironing, I'd say it's a toss-up. I usually need to iron both if I don't get them out of the dryer fast.

I have used quilting cotton to make shirts, and I think they'd make great skirts as well. What they don't do well is make clothes that need a soft fabric. So if your girls' skirts and dresses have lots of gathers, head for the garment section.
