Date: 3/27/12 7:36 PM Hi all, I am working with a disabled childrens charity in south america and we were donated a lovey, old singer machine. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify it, and point me in the direction of where I can find the manual?
I presume I am not threading it right as a whole lot of thread is getting knotted up at the feed dog from the bobbin. I have sewn few times but by all means I am very newbie, and will be the first to admit it, so any help guidance etc etc wll br greatly appreciated. It is the plan that once I figure out how to get all going the kids will have a try too, and we wll see what projects we can work through! the number on the base is: 14450710 I think this makes it a model 15? not sure at all..
also.. no idea why the potos are so huge... sorry

Date: 3/27/12 8:22 PM I would also like to add something by asking a question--what kind of thread are you using? 100% cotton or a polyester? It should be 100% cotton as this machine didn't "grow" on anything else. Star makes a beautiful cotton thread. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. Date: 3/28/12 1:26 AM I think maybe your thread is unsewable in any kind of sewing machine, and might be instead hand quilting thread with the wrong twist for machines and a glaced covering.
The top thread looks sort of like that hand quilting thread, and the bottom thread looks even worse, as it seems to be even twice as thick.
If you try some different thread, thin sewing machine thread, same kind top and bottom at the same time, your problem might just go away. |

Date: 3/28/12 2:23 AM Do you have the needle inserted the proper way? I don't see well but in the picture it looks to me that the eye of the needle is facing the front and has been threaded from front to back. I do believe with the machines that have the bobbin on the left of the machine the needle threads from left to right and not from front to back. |

Date: 3/28/12 4:49 AM From the last image I can see that the needle is indeed positioned with the whole on the side, but the flat part (groove) around the hole should be not on the left, but on the right side. You would need to turn the needle 180 degrees to the right and then insert it. Give it a try, might solve the problem! |

Date: 3/28/12 9:03 AM 15 machines thread from right to left (not front to back as many other machines). That also means that the flat part of the needle faces the left side. ------ Margaret (Singer 201-2), Betty (Singer 15-91), Bud (Singer 503), Kathy (Singer 221), Liz (Singer 221 Centennial Edition)

This machine should have the flat of the needle facing Right, and it should thread Left to Right. Make sure to start with a new needle.
If thread is still tangling on the bottom of the fabric, you very likely need to increase the top tension. Any sort of quality thread, of any fibre content, should work in this machine. I regularly sew with Singers of similar vintage, and they will sew with any thread I can force into a needle and fit through the needle plate. But you have to have all the proper adjustments tweaked to optimize stitching.
