I want to make an envelope style clutch purse using some faux suede that I have. I need help with the steps for doing decorative stitching on the flap only and which stablizers I should use. I have Sulky tear away and wondering if that would be enough. After sewing on the decorative stitches and removing the tear away, I plan to fuse heavy weight stabilizer to the exterior pieces.

Any thoughts on my planned process? Does it sound right? If not, please help! :-)

Hi Cindi,
I don't have any better ideas but I'm sure some of the creative folks here at PR will chime in soon. Sounds like you're on the right track.

I did decorative stitching on real leather (not sure how much faux suede differs), and it turns out that I didn't need any stabilizer at all. It was thin-ish leather, sort of glove weight, if I had to guess. I was making baby shoes (like Robeeze).

I've used Sulky tear-away for other projects and found it was thick and sometimes hard to pick out. YMMV. Samples are your best bet.

I suggest you take a scrap of your fabric and conduct a test. If the stablizer isn't enough, then try two layers. By the way, if you're using heavy weight interfacing, you may not need any stabilizer. When in doubt, test.

No sewing project is ever a complete success nor a total failure.
