I've never quilted before, but I'm looking for a simple quilt pattern/design that would be good for showcasing embroidery. I'd like to make my son a quilt that has 9 or 12 blocks with hand embroidery transportation theme (trucks, cars, helicopters...etc) I have a fat quarter bundle of this:

I originally thought something like this would be good (ACK! Picture turned out huge! I'll just link you guys instead) but I'm not sure if my fat quarter bundle has enough variety in it to be good for all the little blocks. Maybe something with strips would be better??

How about 4.5 inch squares to showcase the fabric you have, alternating with 4.5 inch embroidered squares, with sashing between the squares. The sashing could be about 2 inches finished (that would be 2.5 inch strips, going both vertically and horizontally between the squares). I do know of a pattern, but I have to get home first to give you the link.
Sashing between blocks can cover some inconsistencies well.
HERE is another idea. Look at the third one down.
If you are a newbie to quilting, you want to keep this simple! I hope that helps - I'm new to quilting myself.

How about embroidery in snowball block, alternated with a nine-patch or simple star block?

So the squares/blocks would be of printed travel theme fabrics and alternating solid color blocks with the embroidery?

If so, I'd make the borders of solid fabrics in strips rather than many little squares of different fabrics....I think it would be way too busy unless the eye can rest in some solid colors.

Essentially, reversing the birdie quilt - busy themed blocks and solid strip borders around the blocks?

I'm not sure it suits you fabric exactly but I came across a free pattern on the robert kaufman site call 'bird song' and always thought the layout would make an excellent embroidery or memory/photo quilt. sometimes its hard to find new ways to do them.

Its a nice pattern on its own but I think its got heaps of potential for variations.
