Subject: Pfaff Smarter C110 Pro - thread cutter solution - updated Date: 4/12/12 2:45 PM I have had intermittent success with the auto thread cutter. I had read some having more trouble with cotton thread versus poly. This made sense to me since the cotton seems to have more spring to it.
My troubles were the thread either flying right up into the take up lever area or cutting just a bit too short right at the needle hole or a half inch down, not leaving enough too make the next complete stitch and then I have to rethread, negating the wonderful convenience of the auto thread cutter
Not giving up on my superior masterpiece cotton thread 3000yd spools of which I have about six! They have a large center (inch in diameter) I kept trying, but notice they really did not feed off the spool evenly, I kept noticing a whipping motion when it would feed off of the outside. I thought it probably is the tension when it cuts that is making the thread pull and spring back.
Today, I tried my Aurifill again (1100 yd regular type spool with small center, noticing smooth feeding. The Smarter would cut with just the right amount of tail (about and inch and a half or so) and I could restart stitching without tangles or anything. The machine worked smoothly.
Remembering from when I embroidered more and my longarm quilting, that smooth feeding is key to no thread breaks, a I thought I would give the Superior one last try. Loaded on the separate spool holder and the spool angle pointed the best way possible , it was feeding pretty smoothly, and darned if if the thread cutter cut the big Superior thread spool as well as the Aurifil on the small spool.
Once I use those up I know I would rather just use spools on the regular on board spool holder, but it is great to have the option to use difficult spools.
It's beginning to reassure me that these machines really can work as intended but with all the variety of supplies and situations the machine may not be faulty at all, it is just finding what works best with it.
For now, My thread cutter works! and does not need an adjustment. I am going to keep sewing sewing sewing to test it further.
I hope this might help someone else struggling with this or wondering about the machine

Date: 4/12/12 11:08 PM I feel kind of silly, but since it had the tall spool holder, I kept thinking it should work. I'm still in shock that it is cutting correctly every time! |

Date: 4/13/12 1:07 AM My thread cutter works great - I use the built in holders.
If this works - great!
I may ask about trading for a used qe 4.0.
Im getting mad at the bobbin problem. 2 times in the shop in less than three months. Sure I broke the timing by doing the zig zag on a SS foot -- but really? Shouldnt the needle have just broken?
The "end stitch" thing is annoying - as is the reset of the needle down button -- but, those things could be cute if the other stuff was not going on.
Oh - and the machine only does reverse in some of the stitches - the other ones force you to use the tie off key instead.
AND - I cant get the thing to turn off the sound. I like the sounds now that Ive gotton used to them -- but - it would be nice if the volume worked the way the manual said it does.
The extension table is big and thats nice - but, its flimsy - it bends very easy - its not hard plastic at all.
But, the thread cutter works.
I dont know. Im kinda getting tired of it - the dealer is great - no worries about them. But, twice in the shop in less than 3 months?
I still like a lot of things about the machine -- and if the bobbin was not driving me nuts - I think I would get used to the other stuff that seems odd ... but, at this point - Im ready to ask if I can trade to a used 4.0.
There was a luxe (ish) feeling to the 4.0 that the c-1100 does not have. The Ambition also had that nice feeling - the c-1100 feels nice and quality -- but .. more toyota than mercedes.
Who knows? There is also a demo Elna exellance Ive got my eye on ... but, I like thise 9mm stitches .. and on and onnnnnnn... ------ Drag queen quilter! |

Date: 4/13/12 8:50 AM I hope they can figure out your bobbin sensor problem. It is sooo frustrating when you have to keep taking them in. I have to really concentrate on not getting neck vessel constriction!! as I load it up.
These spools are just too big. They were too tall to fit a spool cap on,lol, Maybe that should have convinced me the thread didn't have the proper distance to travel up the scope to feed evenly, but I am stubborn
Yes, I agree on all of your observations on the Smarter. It definitely is not the more higher tech of the 4.0 and the needle down shut off is a little annoying
When getting the Smarter I was trying to be satisfied not getting the TOL, I hear you. But, darned I still think it takes the thick seams the best.
The dealers are going to be at the big convention next week. I think she will have the new machines after that. You could compare all the options then.
The 4.0 is really neat too!! I have a customer who hasn't had any problems whatsoever with her expression 4.0 except hauling it to class is pretty heavy she says. She does have a the trolley bag to get it in from the car.
I will be interested to hear your update!
