Date: 4/15/12 9:43 PM I'm still new to fitting, and I have a HUGE problem with necklines gaping. High bust says I should be a size 12 then alter for FBA, but it turns out the neckline still gapes, BIG TIME. Playing around with muslin, I've discovered that I had to take 2 inches off the center front and center back, then add 2 inches to the side seams. Is this the proper way to alter for a neckline, or will that ruin the design that is sold on the pattern envelope? |

Date: 4/16/12 8:36 AM I'm not sure if it's "proper" or not, but some on here will agree that if it works for you, it's right Perhaps try cutting a 10 next time. Have you tried Princess seam styles? What pattern did you use?

Date: 4/16/12 8:47 AM I think your present approach to neck alterations will lead to problems in other areas. By coincidence Peggy Sager (Silhouette Patterns) is having a webcast tonight at 8:00 PM (central time) and the subject is "necklines"! I think it could prove very helpful to you since you can actually ask questions "live" if you get yourself logged in. If you're interested you can get more info on the webcast from her website silhouettepatterns.com plus there are a lot of past webcasts you can watch too :). |

Date: 4/16/12 8:12 PM Just want to recommend Sarah Veblen's book The Complete Photo guide to fitting. It is excellent and really approaches fitting in a different way than most others.
Try getting it from your public library first if you are not sure if you want to invest. But it is not pricey. A very good book.

Date: 4/17/12 4:42 AM Somethings not right here. Remeasure yourself and check your fba method. That's a lot to have to take in if you have the correct size. A V neckline will stretch because each side is on the bias but this really sounds extreme. I also agree that your method for taking it in is not really a good one. I also second watching Peggy Sagers webcast. You can watch it afterwards as well as live. ------

Date: 4/17/12 7:42 AM Two inches is a lot, and if you're having to remove this much, the size of pattern you're using is too large. It's possible you have a hollow chest, which means your bust area isn't as full high up as most, even though your bust might be high. (I call this area my "ski slope") I have this problem and when I buy a Big 4 pattern, I have to use a smaller size. ------

 1 member likes this. Thanks for all your help ladies. I have numerous fititing books, including FFRP and the one by Sarah Veblen. That past couple of days I've made 5 muslins, and I've discovered I do indeed have a hollow chest, despite erect posture and a D cup bust. Even though the rest of me is size 16, my neck and collarbone fits perfectly into a size 8. The problem I was having is that none of my books addresses a hollow chest, which was causing me tremendous headaches and discouragement. Thank you for your help ladies, I'm so glad for your help. |

Date: 4/18/12 9:21 PM Yes definately too big. I had this problem for a long time. I am a large girl with an E cup bust and whilst my high bust measures at an 18 I have found going down to a 16 has made a huge difference to the neckline fit.
When I first started sewing and measured my bust I was sewing a size 24 as I didn't know about the high bust measurement. You can imagine how big my necklines were by sewing a 24 when I really needed a 16 here and a substantial FBA  ------
