Date: 4/18/12 10:33 AM I purchased a light weight crinkled mesh knit. I was going to make a simple, loose fitting top or dress to wear layered. I don't know how to pin it. If I smooth it out to cut it, the seams will pull unevenly. If I cut it as is, won't it hang unevenly at the hemline and seamline? I don't mind funky. Do I just go with the flow???
This one has me stumped. -- Edited on 4/21/12 5:17 AM -- ------ Lalaland |

Date: 4/20/12 11:17 AM I did a quick search and found this but it discusses wovens:
Crinkly/Gauzy fabric
But you are using a knit. Hum...
How about using a really thin interfacing or some of that dissolving stuff for embroidery for the seam allowances, slightly overlapping the seam stitch line and hemline stitch line? Just to stabilize the areas during construction?
I hope someone who knows chimes in soon. ------ Fashion Maté, where I blog about what I (eventually) sew : http://fashionmate.blogspot.com

Date: 4/20/12 4:14 PM I suppose you mean a 'crinkled mesh knit,' although I LOVE the idea of a 'mess knit,' because that's what they can seem like!
Is the fabric something like this?
If the fabric 'wants' to be crinkly, as it does in this garment, then you would lay out and cut it just as it lies, without smoothing or stretching.
But would you prefer not to have the crinkles? |

Date: 4/21/12 0:02 AM I made some crinkle gauze tops last summer and ironed the wrinkles out before I cut out the pieces. Then sewed it up and laundered. The wrinkles came back and all is fine. Just make sure that there is ease in the garment because it will be a little smaller. ------ Marilyn

Date: 4/21/12 1:23 PM You might try using weights instead of pins and definately a rotary cutter and a with-nap layout. I would not flatten it.
Bigger seam allowances might be needed to keep the elastics from pulling out of seams.
Good luck with your garment. |

Date: 4/27/12 9:18 AM layer the fabric between two sheets of tissue paper and lay the pattern pieces over the tissue. This is one kind of fabric that I actually pin my patterns onto the fabric and after I cut the pieces out I leave them pinned until it's time to sew. ------ JanieV |
