Subject: Oh no!!!! Janome Magnolia 7318 bad out of the box? Date: 4/22/12 5:07 PM

We've carefully and gently opened the box, followed all instructions to a "T," and what should we hear upon beginning to sew a seam?: A horrid, awful, grinding and almost banging sound. I re-threaded and re-loaded bobbin twice, checked feed dogs, opened bobbin case and cleaned for lint, tried various stitch patterns/lengths/widths and slight tension adjustment......nothing works! The thing sounds like it's been sitting in the middle of the Sahara, baked under suns. Oh - and it still has nice machine oil - not dry. I am clueless plus dismayed. Tomorrow I'll call, but in the meantime, is there anything it sounds like to you (no pun intended). Maybe it's just a lemon....

Oh, and as far as the stitch, well, that's just fine. Nice, even stitches, no matter the pattern chosen; and tension just right. But the grinding and groaning!

Could be shipping damage. UPS threw an eBay machine from the back of the truck to the front, right in front of my house, I saw it as I stood at the door. Sickening. Made awful noises and the feed dogs didn't move properly. Then they didn't come to retrieve it for over a week. A month of hassles. And it was a 240. I now have a 240 that I bought from a dealer, sews like a dream.

Where did you get your Magnolia? Online or dealer?

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

Call the seller and return it for another if you decide it isn't shipping damage - like anything else, each and every sewing machine model will have a few lemons. Not to say the whole model is bad - it happens. I am typing on a large Mac which had a failed motherboard three days after I bought it. It happens. Got it back 3-4 days later and all has been well now for the last two years+...hope that doesn't change. It is SO nice when things are to love right out of the box, but sometimes....keep us updated!

I got it online, from Sew Vac. They were as lovely as could be to talk to, and I heard very, very good things of them here. I am starting to think either 1) lemon or 2) careless handling in shipping. I'm calling tomorrow when they're open and we'll find out then.

This sounds ominously like my machine, Maia. Awful noises!

Carlie,
Please don't worry. There are so many online dealerships and machines getting shipped all over the country...it must be okay, is what I told myself. I'm thinking that it does now and again happen...but not always. (Or else, surely, it wouldn't be financially feasible for these online dealers.) Let us know when yours arrives - exciting!

Thanks Mufffet. Your motherboard story is encouraging! I will definitely update. This is just life.

I spoke with someone there this morning. He was very kind, and said it maybe (?) might be the belt that needed tightening. Or it might (?) be something else. He is going to speak with the man who sold it to me, see what it might be, and either way, it'll get shipped back and another sent to me (unless there is some miraculously simple thing either he or I are overlooking that the other gentleman might know of). So they'll call back....
