Date: 4/24/12 5:49 PM Hi,
I've been looking at pattern making software online, and I downloaded the demo to Garment Designer. I read a couple of old posts on here, but some people didn't really like it.
I'm wanting to make children's patterns to sell.
If any of you have any kind of software, would you please share what you have and if you like it?
I would like to be able to also label the pattern parts in the software. I know some of these are really expensive so I was hoping to find something not too outrageous.
Thanks for your help.

Date: 4/24/12 7:54 PM You could check out Wild Ginger. It seems to be reasonably priced for this type software. -- Edited on 4/24/12 7:54 PM -- ------ Sewing: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness. ~Author Unknown

Date: 4/24/12 7:55 PM Most pattern drafting software packages have licenses that limit what you can do with them. For example, the one I use, PatternMaster Boutique from Wild Ginger, lets you draft as many different patterns as you like, but you are not allowed to give away or sell the patterns you create with the program.
They do have a professional drafting program called Cameo; it is meant for just what you want: drafting patterns to sell. It's what Hotpatterns uses to draft their patterns. I have no idea how much it costs, but I do know that it requires some knowledge of flat pattern drafting in order to use it. Your best bet is to go to the Wild Ginger website (www.wildginger.com) and see what their requirements are.
Good luck!

Date: 4/24/12 8:22 PM Rather than electronic software have you considered pattern making by hand? It is not as hard as you would think and children's clothes are relatively easy to draft as the basic shapes are pretty simple and children don't have the same fit issues as adults.
The best text is Winifred Aldrich's Metric Pattern Cutting for Children's Wear and Babywear. Prices vary a lot on-line but you shouldn't have to pay more than $50. Here is a link to:
Fishpond Aust and
Amazon USA
The process used in this book is to draft some basic blocks (dress, skirt, pants etc) and these can be traced and cut onto hard cardboard. After that you use your basic blocks over and over to create variations on the basic shape. Don't be put off by the 'metric' as you can substitute imperial measurements, or better still, get over it and work in metric as it is SO much easier than imperial!

Date: 4/25/12 0:14 AM Thanks so much to everyone! I have been looking at Wild Ginger, Patternmaster, and Garment Designer.
I hadn't read anything about the limited use, but I was sure going to ask before I purchased anything.
Jenny, I will check out those links.
If anyone has any other opinions, please let me hear.
