Hello everyone,

I am a newbie and a novice. I haven't sewn a dress in 25ish years! (and I didn't know a lot back then either).

Anyway, I took on the challenge of sewing an "easy" petite dress. So far so good. I love the front and the length. Only problem is that once I inserted the invisible zipper in the back, I have this huge "bloop" from the waist up. All in all, I think I made the waist too tight (it gathers). But, I'm not sure how I should fix this. I'm inclined to trim the length off the upper back torso. I wish I could post a pic.

The pattern is an old Very Easy Vogue. 7802 - bought it on EBay. It's basically 6 pieces: Top front & skirt. 2 piece top back and 2 piece skirt back. Again, I wish I could post a pic.

Any ideas?

If I understand you correctly, it might be a sway back issue. Is there a sort of horizontal bloop? across the lower back?

If it were me, I'd put it on inside out. Pin out the excess fabric until it sits flat & then sew along the pinned lines (of course you might need to remove the zipper). Is the extra fabric low enough that you could just have a larger seam allowance on the bodice where it connects to the skirt to fix it?

Pics would help.

Thanks. I will try to take a pic in a few days.

Actually, the "bloop" is vertical. It starts just below the bra-line all the way down to the waist (which is snug). In other words, I think the waist may be pulling up higher, hence the bloop. The zipper looks smooth, so it's not the actual way the zipper went in. I think it's just the fit, and I just need to figure out how to make it fit me!

I don't understand how to post a pic? It looks like you can only insert a website? I"ll try to figure it out and post back in a few days.

Thank you for your input.

If it's vertical, can you take double-ended darts (like a diamond)? Otherwise, it sounds like you need to take it apart at the waist and pull down the extra fabric. You can upload your photos to Flickr or Picasa (both free) and then link to them.

Can you let out the side seams at the waist area? That would allow the zipper to relax and hopefully lay flat.

It sounds like the back waist is too long for you...very common for petites. Deesews suggestion of undoing the waist and removing the extra fabric above the waist is probably the best solution however since you have already fitted the zipper this will require some extensive unpicking! I would suggest you try Tizmehr's advice and let it out at the side seams at the waist first since this is an easier and quicker alteration. Relaxing the waist might just be enough to let the back fall smoothly. It may not be perfect and the waist will probably sit a little too low but it might salvage your dress without the need for an extensive remake.

For future projects you should have someone measure your back waist - tie a piece of cord or ribbon around your waist as a reference point and then measure from 'bump' at the back of your neck (usually the 2nd top vertebrae) down to your waist. Then check this measurement against the pattern sizing to confirm if you are 'short waisted' and by how much. Then you can incorporate this adjustment into any patterns where the back waist measurement would be critical, such as a waisted dress. HTH

Thanks so much for the instructions!

Now I can see how tight it looks in the back - yuck. ;( Oh well, like I said, I have NOT sewn much of anything for about 25 years. So, I'm proud that I at least got it to LOOK like a dress. LOL

Yes, I'm top heavy - which is most likely not helping matters.

The zipper lies nicely flat when I'm not wearing it...and I also have not finished it off yet. I figure I'm going to need to remove it to make a change.

Even if I can't make it great, I'd like to know what to do better next time.

Sorry JenLeeC, we must have been posting at the same time. Hmmm, THAT does describe the problem: the back waist being too long... Yet, it's okay in the front? (I have a tummy that I'm trying to hide.) I'm not petite petite - just short! LOL

Unfortunately, I don't think there's enough to let out on the sides. My instincts do tell me to shorten the mid back. I can handle removing the zipper (Hey - I already put it in wrong once!). I was just afraid to cut.

Thanks for the tip for the future. I will be unpicking for awhile.
