Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and pretty much new to sewing if you don't count the sewing class I had to take in 8th grade. I'm 52 if that tells you anything. My wife and her sister are on the other hand very adept at sewing and have worked for various companies such as Bali etc. sewing lingerie etc.

She recently indicated an interest in sewing again so I purchased her a Janome Horizon MC12000. Given her first language is Spanish she is shy about participating in forums etc. so I thought I'd help her along. My intent is to access the knowledge base you women have on various topics to help me "explain" to her how to get the most out of this machine. When I purchased the machine I also recieved a Janome serger model 990D that I have an immediate questions about.

What attachment is necessary for the Serger to be able to sew elastic such as that used in lingerie? Specifically for the Serger 990D but also for the MC12000 if there is one.

Sorry for the long post. Just thought I would prep you for the many stupid questions to follow.

You bought these really cool machines for your wife? Wow. Sounds like you should start sewing again.

The Janome dealer should be able to answer your questions. Or you can check the Janome website. That will tell you what accessories are available for her new machines, though not the prices. One thing about Janome presser feet and attachments, they are much less expensive than feet and attachments for other major brands. I think the most expensive foot I ever bought for my Janomes was $50. Other brands sell the feet at 2-3 times that price. Walking foot $25-30 for Janome, over $100 for any of the other brands.

And welcome to PR! I hope you check out the Men Who Sew boards. If you do start using those really, really cool toys -- I mean tools -- that you bought for your wife, you have company. Vogue Patterns magazine has featured some of the men who are members of PR. Sewing is like woodworking without the splinters and sawdust. And we usually don't need hearing protection to use our tools.

Yes. Unfortunately I went with my wife to the Janome dealer with the intent of purchasing a 9700 model. We left with the MC12000.
Actually given one of my hobbies is building computers I have been helpig her along with the Horizonlink software and getting to know the interface.

However - though I expect before all is over to become quite knowledgeable about the machines and "How to" perform various tasks I do not expect to actually sew. Too many hobbies as it is. Though the potential these machines have is quite amazing.

I have spoke with the dealer and he said he would call Janome as both machines are quite new. Given I parrticipate in forums for insects, automobiles and firearms I know there is NO substitute for experience. You ladies know far more than any dealer and I daresay than the manufacturer themselves as you are in the trenches so to speak!!

Contact your local Janome dealer and ask for a "get acquainted" lesson for you and your spouse as your wife is not fluent in English and your sewing skills are a bit rusty and antiquated.

Then you both can attend, ask questions and when finished you can pick each other's brain.

The dealer should have the attachment for serging elastic . Not sure there is a foot for the sewing machine.

Looks like we posted at the same time!

I have found this book especially helpful in learning the many capabilities of a serger.

Great Thanks. I did sign her up for lessons on the MC12000. Didn't plan on attending as they are during the day. I do plan on picking Janome's mind on Monday. Just got the machine this past Wednesday.

Hmm... looks like I'm going to have a new hobby whether I like it or not.

From the Janome website:

For the 990D Elastic Gathering Attachment part #200218102
Used for attaching elastic 3.5mm to 8mm wide.

I don't think I've seen one for a normal sewing machine. Just sergers and coverstitch machines.

Good luck!

Thanks - I ordered it today. We'll see if that is what they need.
