Rash Guard Collars Question on Collars

I've drafted a pattern for a "rash guard shirt" (those shirts that people wear over their bathing suits for sun protection, they are also worn by surfers) and I'm having trouble with the collar. I can't get the collar to lay down properly and wondering if there is a trick to this type of collar. The collar is similar to the collar on a cyclists jersey but it is not split, another words, it's one solid piece. I've cut a strip of material and folded it length wise and attached it with my serger and it "droops" down in the front. The rash guard shirts I see in the catalogs have collars that lay down nicely around the neckline but you can still see them (unlike a facing that would be on the inside to finish the neckline of the shirt). Any help would be appreciated as I am beyond frustration at this point!

The shirts have short zippers at center back to allow the wearer to get into them (they are too tight to pull over the head). If you don't want it to be so fitted, you'll need to interface. I used a folded piece of silk organza (so, two layers) in a collar of a similar type, and it worked well. I don't know how well it will hold up to repeated dunkings if you plan for the shirt to be worn in the water, though. I would certainly pre-shrink it several times. The virtue of silk organza is it won't lose glue or break down like regular interfacing might if subjected to salt/chlorine, and it dries fairly quickly. ------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com ================= 2007: purchased 115+, sewed 105+ So close to parity, yet so far Trying again in 2008 Yards purchased: 133 Yards sewn: Somewhere around 95 2009? The issue here is likely to be the fit of the shirt and getting the neckline just right. I am not a fit guru, but if the back or front of the shirt aren't quite right, the collar will sag. Try putting the shirt and collar on the person who will wear it without attaching them. My guess is that there will be a gap from the front of the shirt to the bottom of the collar that will need to be filled in. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown.
