Can anyone tell, I'm dumb when it comes to old Singers..lol
Even though I learned on my mothers treadle, yrs. ago.
I've found an old Singer, maybe a 15-91? One that has a rounded wooden cover. I unlocked one end, but the other end is stuck and won't come off. I can't find a latch, or what opens it. I don't want to break it, by trying to pry it off. Does anyone know how it opens ?
Thank you !

Lift the open side, maybe an inch or so and that should allow the latch on the other side to come free

There is no latch on the other end, just a catch on the inside. If you can't easily lift off the cover after unlocking it then something might be caught against it. Just give it a wiggle and a jiggle and see if it comes loose!

Did you get it open? Wow, I'd lose my mind trying to find out what was inside! lol

Thank you gals ! I had already giggled and wiggled it and then allowed my husband to with his manly strength..until I asked him to stop, it might break. I've put my hand under the cover, but can't seem to find anything keeping it from opening. Guess it might get broken after all.

singer latch

If it's one of these, you'll need to use the key to unlock the one end, the other end has a latch and a keyhold type plate. Once the end is unlocked lift it about an inch or so and push the lid in the direction of the locked side and pull up (this should disengage the latch). Mine required a little muscle as it had been locked up for years.

If you are still having problems, go to the Yahoo Group "vintagesingers", join, and post the question. These folks have run up against every problem you can have with an old Singer.

I thank all of you so much for being so helpful ! Loti, it worked when I pushed several times really hard, and pulled up several times hard.. like you said !! Darn, no foot control. There is a hole in the base part where a knee lift would generally go. But that doesn't mean one goes there, I guess. It doesn't have any model # I can find. Does only one Singer model come with the mailbox type lid...like Loti just put a picture of ? Or what that lid made for several models? I will type in the serial number and see it that gives me any information.
