Favorite 5 thread sergers for coverstitch function?

Which ones should I be looking at? Ease of switching configurations is not really a concern because I have a 4 thread serger so I would probably leave the 5 thread set up for CS most of the time. I would, however, be interested in which 5 thread sergers perform well in CS mode. It has a beautiful stitch - no matter which one I try. The one downside is that it is not as easy to switch between stitches as something like the Babylocks. This model has been replaced by newer models at the dealerships and I can't speak to those. Maybe you can find a good deal on a used 936.

The BL does a perfect CS on all settings, especially with the CS foot. BeckyNoSleep Intermediate USA Member since 4/19/10 Posts: 129	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 5/9/12 12:28 PM I hate to say don't get a machine, but I have been having coverstitch problems with my Pfaff Coverlock 3.0 - I would recommend thoroughly test driving any machine you are considering including doing a coverstitch over seams. That being said - if you are sewing denim a lot and need a 5 thread safety stitch, the Coverlock does that nicely - and FAST!

I went to a dealer today and looked at all used: pfaff 4874(?), Elna 945 and a Viking 936. For various reasons none of them appealled to me, and I started to think a dedicated machine is probably the way to go. The changing over for the 936 took them 40 minutes and it still failed to produce a stitch. But it was only 299 so yeah, I gave it a good look. I Just can't swing the BLCS at the price they quoted so I'm awaiting a quote from a nearby Janome dealer on the 1000cpx. I have a combined machine - a Pfaff 4862 - which I now just use as an overlocker. IMO the dedicated machines have a better cover stitch. I ended up buying a secondhand Brother coverstitch machine which does a fantastic job and is much easier to use, and I just use the Pfaff coverlock machine just for overlocking (serging). At the end of the day I wish I had known this in advance because it would have saved me a huge amount of money if I had just bought dedicated machines initially. ------ Maree - Sydney, Australia
