Fans of British series "Call the Midwife"

PBS announced it for Sept. with 6 episodes. I keep waiting for US television to do smart dramatic series instead of dozens more cop shows, sexed-up dramas, potty-mouthed comedies. I was a fan of Parenthood (Ron Howard, family man?) then the finale had the teens going to bed-yuk! Now my only favorites are NatGeo and Discovery, and Harry's Law is getting cancelled! So much for mature real women on TV.

Date: 5/16/12 9:00 AM I've just discovered the British Series "Doc Martin". I love the characters, stories and humor. It looks fabulous. Here's the BBC's page about "Call the Midwife" -- amazingly, I'm actually able to access the clips. I love her sitcom, she's so funny in it, and I've seen trailers for some one-off show with her going tramping with Bear Grylls that seems well worth watching! I haven't seen Call The Midwife yet but the trailers make it seem entertaining. I will try to watch it if I can figure out when it's on.

Also, have you seen "Foyle's War?" It is a British drama that my PBS station ran for a while. There were 6 seasons in all. You can rent the DVD's from Netflix or possibly your local library. It is set in England during WWII and the period details are wonderful. Also, every episode highlights at least one little known/unknown aspect of everyday life during that war.

Yes, it is. But she's definitely not playing the charcter of her sit-com. Her role in this one is very different and she plays it well. The series, when originally shown over here in UK, was Sunday evening gentle family drama-viewing. It's a rose-tinted view of that particular era & part of London.
