Date: 5/20/12 8:13 PM I was going to make a shirred maxi dress from the pattern that I saw on a recent Sew It All episode from the lady who wrote the book, How to Sew in a Straight Line (I think that's the title). What if I use a cotton that is rather thin--how would I add a lining when there is shirring up top and then flows out without there being a definite line or break in the look of the dress? I've never sewn a lining, but was trying to think how I would do it for this. Could you sew the lining in with the regular fabric when you shirr it, or would that add bulk?

Date: 5/21/12 9:27 AM Mrs4Him, I think you are talking about "underlining". That's when you actually attach the two pieces of fabric and treat them as one. If your lining is super thin, that's an option with the shirring. Can you post a picture of the dress? You might be able to take a finished measurement of the garment and cut the lining accordingly, eliminating the shirring on the lining. If the shirring has a stretch factor while wearing the dress, perhaps adding a few little gathers to the top of the lining before attaching it to the top of the dress would help. |
