I found this halter dress at Jones New York. What attracts me to it is the full back coverage. Has anyone seen a pattern that resembles this look?

Hi Schmammy.

Let me warn you, I sew like I cook, a little of this, a little of that.

V8727 the shoulder line of the bodice back looks about right. The bodice back pattern piece can be combined with the back waist piece and redrawn to create a bodice back pattern that extends to the waist. You'll probably notice that the band portion would need to be slashed and opened when redrawing to accommodate extending the back darts. The skirt fullness looks good, too.

V1223. This has a pleated front bodice. I believe that you would be able to soften this bodice front with folds instead of pleats. You would have to match it to the bodice front shoulder line of the other pattern. And, of course, eliminate the pretty lengthwise extension that flows down and becomes part of the skirt. (or incorporate it for added flare) I'd have to see the pattern pieces, but probably the originally designed pleats would have the usual notched cuts. I would mark those, but not cut them as the cut line would probably be slightly altered by softly folding instead of pleating. And leave extra seam allowance until after the fabric is softly folded.

I noticed that a lot of other patterns with similar features are made only for knits.

Did you notice on the board that EleanorSews has ordered her MOB fabric from Sarah Veblem ( or is it Veblen?).

I second Vogue 8727 if the covered back is what really draws you to the dress. I haven't sewn it up yet, but I do recall if you want the longer halter version of the dress it takes somewhere around 14 yards or so of fabric between the lining and the outer fabric! Just something to keep in mind.

Oh, snap! I bought vogue 1223 as a possible MOG dress a month ago. No wonder I was drawn to the JNY design. Looks like it is time to get started on some muslins!
