Stripes and plaids Bad idea in general?

Date: 5/25/12 8:02 AM In my stash there are a couple of striped fabrics and a couple of plaids (one purple and black--I think I was under the influence of Project Runway's Mondo....). I've sort of shied away from them, especially the plaids, because of lack of confidence in my ability to match at the seams. But lately I wonder whether they are just unsuitable for a plus-size figure, period. I already have so MANY tote bags. Perhaps there's some home dec application.... With two of the fabrics I can make something for my slim, peppy 9-year-old, anyway. I love plaid but make sure it is a very small plaid. From distance it looks homogeneous. Same goes for strips. I want them tiny and not very far apart. I even put a small ruffle on one of my plaid shirts last summer. ------ Ada

Our instructor played around with stripe scale in my sewing class by holding up fabric samples, and your eye does what she describes. For your fabrics, I think it all depends on the scale of the stripes/plaid. And bias--cut with plenty of ease (about ten inches, according to Marcy Tilton)--can be very flattering to generous figures. To some extent, the same thing works for plaids. Check out the images here. Some of the garments are shown on plus-sized bodies.

Date: 5/25/12 3:44 PM I think the color values make a big difference. If the colors are close in value, then the stripe or plaid is not as "loud". For instance, a bright primary colors plaid on a white background would not be a great choice but maybe your purple and black are close enough in value that it would be a more subtle effect. I think we would have to see a picture of your plaid and stripe to say. I love plaids and stripes but I think we have to be extra careful with them and look at them case by case.
