I've sort of shied away from them, especially the plaids, because of lack of confidence in my ability to match at the seams. But lately I wonder whether they are just unsuitable for a plus-size figure, period.
If it makes a difference, I'm sort of pear-ish--though there was a description in a library book about fitting that probably fits better--"Lady Peanut." ------ Jeanne

Yes, plaids are horrible. Accessories aren't too bad. Maybe a tote bag? ;) |

Hee. I already have so MANY tote bags. Perhaps there's some home dec application....
With two of the fabrics I can make something for my slim, peppy 9-year-old, anyway.
The Mondo plaid isn't suitable for anything but a jacket, though. ------ Jeanne

Date: 5/25/12 11:32 AM What about just using the plaid or stripes for pockets and collars on a jacket or just a piece inserted in a skirt surround by a solid color. That might work ------ What is Maxine saying??

Date: 5/25/12 11:35 AM It really depends on how big the plaid and strips are. I love plaid but make sure it is a very small plaid. From distance it looks homogeneous. Same goes for strips. I want them tiny and not very far apart.
I even put a small ruffle on one of my plaid shirts last summer.

For your fabrics, I think it all depends on the scale of the stripes/plaid. And don't forget that you can break things up with areas of bias if you are using a pattern with any sort of princess seaming, etc.

Date: 5/25/12 3:08 PM If you put stripes on the bias, you can get a flattering mitered effect. And bias--cut with plenty of ease (about ten inches, according to Marcy Tilton)--can be very flattering to generous figures.
To some extent, the same thing works for plaids. Check out the images here. Some of the garments are shown on plus-sized bodies. |

Date: 5/25/12 3:44 PM I think the color values make a big difference. If the colors are close in value, then the stripe or plaid is not as "loud". For instance, a bright primary colors plaid on a white background would not be a great choice but maybe your purple and black are close enough in value that it would be a more subtle effect. I think we would have to see a picture of your plaid and stripe to say.
I love plaids and stripes but I think we have to be extra careful with them and look at them case by case. |
