Just a wee RANT! Some patterns...! Grrrrr...

Date: 5/29/12 11:50 PM I've wanted to rant on this for a very long time...and as a jacket pattern I wanted to work on tonight is actually sizes 12-20 when I need size 8, and it's now OOP, I have time to go ahead and rant. Not naming any longtime pattern company, WHY WHY WHY do they ALWAYS use the upper collar pattern for the under collar pattern???!! Seriously...is it REALLY too much expense and bother to add turn-of-cloth to the upper and reduce the under by same??! Yes I know different fabrics require different TOC amounts...but when a coat pattern is for medium weight woolens, one can make an assumption that a 1/4" TOC would be a basic pattern starting point! Yes I can -and do- adjust the patterns myself, but maybe if SOME certain pattern company that regularly charges Big Buck$ for their "designer" patterns drafted their patterns with basics like TOC, beginners would be more encouraged to sew, and others would be more encouraged to buy these patterns. And let's not even start on the silly finishing methods...! Oh and PS: STOP putting huge globs of ease in knit sleeve caps already!!! No wonder independent pattern companies are so popular. Ok, it's out of my system now...and I can go back to adding TOC to the upper collars and reducing the lower collars of every Big 4 pattern I own. -- Edited on 5/29/12 11:52 PM -- ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life! With the way current large pattern making companies have been going over the last 20 years (and I'm NOT including Kwik Sew until recently), I've quit buying their patterns. You're right, Lynne. Why can't they add turn-of-cloth to upper collars? The roll would be so nice. But you know how money is with some companies. So try an independent; they're working hard to make us happy. Date: 5/30/12 8:25 AM Its pretty clear your problem is not with the pattern.. but with you.. You need to gain some weight. Just a few sizes and those larger pattern sizes will fit better..

Date: 5/30/12 9:08 AM I have wondered why they don't allow for TOC in their patterns and as far as excess ease in the sleeve caps, what about excess ease everywhere? I have wanted to rant about that! I routinely cut a size two sizes smaller than what I should according to THEIR CHART just to have a decent start with the fit. I wonder - don't they get the feedback from customers? Don't they realize the popularity of indie patterns is growing? I guess they don't feel threatened by it yet. I really like Jalie (but they don't have the same range of styles) Onion seems pretty good, I've tried a couple of theirs and I'm going to try Style Arc as well. You would think the Big4 would get tired of our rants, honest negative critiques, and references to their crappy sleeve cap ease and as another PR member used the term "ease of doom" and etc... I guess they figure if they are making a profit.. ------ Relax, don't get your elastic all twisted up in your waistband! Hell hath no fury for the poor soul that sews an ill-fitting garment! Duhhhhh!!! Well darn, I thought it was out of my system after my first rant, and that calming back rub. Hah, consider yourself lucky! I'm still hating the last Bogue-us pattern where the shoulder of the A cup size front piece was 3/8" wider than the B and C pieces. How is that going to work? Date: 5/30/12 12:44 PM Hey, Bogus patterns are expensive (we won't count sales) so you should complain directly to the pattern company. At worst you will get no reply but the opportunity to vent again and maybe you will get a coupon good for two new bougus patterns to hate! ------ JanieV
