I want to make new window toppers for my all purpose and sewing space. I am thinking of doing simple box pleats. I have two windows in this room. (Of course they are different sizes!!)

I found some fabric that I quite like and it is striped. Problem is that the stripes are rail roaded meaning they run from selvage to selvage (side to side). If I use this fabric I want to use the stripe so that it is running vertical when toppers are finished.

Has any one done this with success?? (Or not...) Any problems, tips or words of wisdom you can share??

Appreciate anything you can offer up. I am hoping to buy the fabric tomorrow

Lay it out to be sure you can match without loosing a lot of the fabric for the repeat.

If the fabric is not stretchy on the cross-grain, you should not have any problems.

I've done it many times with a stripe and box pleats! As long as the fabric is stable you should have no problem.

Tips and thoughts. Get enough yardage so that you don't have to piece it for the length needed to fit the window. You can seam it if needed by hiding the seam in one of the pleats but it's easier if you can cut it full length. I can cut 2 toppers from the same yardage by cutting one from each selvege edge. Double and even triple figure out the yardage you need so you don't end up short. Ask me how I know!

If I think of anything else I'll chime back in.

Thanks so much!! This sounds promising.

If I do box pleats I won't have to worry about matching the stripes. I can hide the joins in the pleats.

This fabric seems pretty good - not a lot of stretch, not too heavy. I have a peice that I am going to play with tonight to see how it likes being folded into pleats. I learned to do this because I have had fabrics in the past - not so much! If it doesn't I have another style of topper I can make that doesn't require as much fabric.

Yes - the math is driving me mad trying to figure out how much I need. I don't want to be short, don't want to buy way too much either. It is a lot harder to think "sideways".
