I have the best boss in the whole world. Yesterday, he called me and told me that I couldn't leave the office until he made it back. This was not too unusual. Then he calls me and tells me to meet him outside. He then presented me with a Singer Featherweight! It needs a little TLC but it is so pretty!!! http://www.friendsofpr.com/srb5132/Featherweight.jpg

I would like to get a little more information about it. It doesn't look like there is a belt to connect the motor to the wheel. Is this normal? Do I need to use a special oil or just any sewing machine oil?

What a pretty machine! She's not a featherweight, I think she's a 15-91. The serial number is on the front bottom, just behind the spool pin. You can look it up on the singer website to verify model and find out her birth year. That model has a potted motor and won't need a belt. It's a great machine! You can either make a simple base and use it on a tabletop or find an original cabinet for cheap to set her in. I have my grandmothers in the cabinet and adore it.

Here is some good info with a link to the manual
http://blog.sew-classic.com/2008/10/05/singer-1591-sewing-machine-review.aspx

It's also a great place to get replacement parts and bobbins if you need them.

Thank you so much! I have been looking at all the pictures of Featherweights and couldn't understand why mine just didn't quite match.

So this is the kind of machine that is meant to be mounted in a cabinet or on a table?

Oh it's lovely! You can put it in a Singer carrying case, that is how I have my 15-90. ... What a really nice boss to buy that for you!

Definitely the best boss! I do most of my sewing on a 15-91 that looks just like that. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

This is a very nice gift, the 15-91 is a joy to use. The little floral pattern is so beautiful. There are so many fun attachments that work well with it and are available for very little money on Ebay. Parts are also plentiful should you need to do some fixing. When I got mine it was in bad need of oiling and even gear grease/lubricant in the ports near the back. Check all of this before you use it. The manual has much information on the topic. Enjoy!

What a great boss! I need one of those. Seeing the pic reminds me I need to get my 15-91 to the shop. It works like a champ but someone did a "home" re-wiring at some point. It has an Electrolux vacuum cleaner cord on it (rolling my eyes).

How fantastic! You must be a really good employee for your boss to get you a nice present like that!!! I second the recommendation for the sew-classic website, they were very helpful with my vintage machines.
