So, I went dress shopping for my brother's wedding with my mother today, and she found one thing that she really liked, but of course was too small. Here's my frankenpattern solution:

Looks like a great plan to me. Just do a first draft in muslin to make sure the band is right and it fits together as you want. Bet your version will look better than the store's. :)
