Hi,
I'm making a dress in silk - patterned and slippy. I can only get general purpose i.e. polyester thread in my local store. Will that be ok or should I go for a silk thread?

Christine

General sewing thread is fine, and my preferred thread for seams.

Silk thread is very strong, and if there's stress on a seamline, the fabric is likely to rip before the seam does. Better to have the seam tear, which can be resewn, than the fabric!

I use silk thread for top stitching and basting, but rarely for seaming.

I have used machine embroidery thread if I needed a fine thread and didn't have silk in the color I wanted. Test stitch on a scrap. Poly will work most of the time.

Sandra Betzina recommends regular poly thread or a hundred percent cotton thread, but not silk thread.

I have had older pieces of silk get rot. I am sure the silk thread is affected similarly.
