General sewing thread is fine, and my preferred thread for seams.
Silk thread is very strong, and if there's stress on a seamline, the fabric is likely to rip before the seam does. Better to have the seam tear, which can be resewn, than the fabric!
I use silk thread for top stitching and basting, but rarely for seaming.
