Date: 6/9/12 3:43 PM My friend is pretty new to garment sewing (but an accomplished quilter). She bought some silk in Thailand and would like to make a simple jacket. I'm trying to help her pick a pattern, probably needs to be plus size, with no lining, and simple so the silk can be the star (I haven't seen the fabric yet, will do so this week). I am thinking about suggesting Butterick 5053 http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/15417 (sorry, not sure how to make that a hot link).
I've tried looking at some Loes Hinse patterns, but for some reason, all I can find is her RTW page.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Date: 6/9/12 3:58 PM What type of silk? That will make a difference. Here's my pick for a shantung or Dupioni type; Kwik Sew 3680. No revers, making it very easy for a beginner.
For a softer silk, and/or if she prefers the look of a notch collar (but without the difficulty of sewing a true notch collar) or a shawl collar, Kwik Sew 3334.
If her silk is a soft, slippery satin weave type, charmeuse etc, I would recommend against using it for a jacket for any beginner.
Being Thailand silk, my guess would be it's a shantung type, which is excellent for simple unlined jackets.
Sorry for lack of links, I dunno how to from my iPad. ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life! And Rupert (Pfaff 2023), Baby (BL Enlighten), Victor (BLCS), Ash (Bernina 350SE), Pal (Bernina 530), Kee (Bernina 750) and the Featherteen Flock!
Most of all, I heart Woo (HimmyCat). Until we meet again, my beautiful little boy. I love you. |

Date: 6/9/12 3:59 PM That would probably be a good choice and the Loes Hinse line too. One of my favorite unlined jackets is Vogue 8620 and Katherine Tilton's Vogue 8654 looks as if it would let the fabric shine. ------ Patti

Date: 6/9/12 4:03 PM The B5053 may work well for her. I made this jacket a couple years ago...it was a total wadder for me, due to so many fitting problems, but I always have huge fitting problems with Butterick, and no longer use their patterns.
I'd definitely advise her to make a muslin first, regardless which pattern she decides on. ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life!
