I have the Threads Magazine DVD archive up to 2009. Somewhere in there, I can't find it, was an article about making a summer-weight jacket from a kimono.

The Threads online forum has become just about useless, because there's no filtering on the search function. I've searched with "kimono", "surplice", "wrap"........ all to no avail.

The photo I'm remembering showed the jacket in a pastel or print fabric, and it was worn with a plain knee-length skirt.

I have a very nice shibori kimono, which I have taken apart to make such a jacket. I do not want to make a traditional kimono, I have nowhere to wear such a thing.

I have searched Folkwear patterns, there is nothing there that I want to use for this.

Any ideas for a pattern for such a jacket?

I don't think the search functions at all well. I have the 2011 archives and I seem to remember an article about kimono fabrics..and I got all kinds of articles including waistbands for pants, shopping in Vancouver, etc.

One of the articles I remember used the Sewing Workshop Kimono jacket as a base and Paw Prints (Purrfection Artistic Wearables) had a very nice jacket based on a kimono. I hope this gives you a starting point.

Oh, thank you! You were right, it is Sewing Workshop I was remembering. It's the Now Shirt, made as a jacket, the Ikina Jacket and Mimosa top.

I had searched both on the Threads online forum (it is badly done) and on the Threads Archives DVD.

I found the photo by laboriously clicking page by page on my Archives DVD. It is Threads, October 2007, page 61.

I am not spending money on these DVDs again. They are not well-produced, so some of the text that appeared in the magazine is cut off. The search feature does not work very well.

Send me a pm, next time I'm in Seattle I'll treat you to coffee.

Hmmmm. I typed "kimono" in mine and it came right up. "The Go-Anywhere Kimono Coat". I just got mine about a month ago.

However, there are some other pages you might be interested in, too....

The reversible kimono coat: issue 103, pg 68
and a kimono purse issue: 135 pg 80
and an article on "traditional japanese textiles": issue 70, pg 68
