We bought our ds a couple of suits. They are a bit big because he is growing so fast and want these suits to last.

Well, the pants are a bit long and need hemming. How do I hem them with the need to let them down once he grows more?

Thanks!

I don't know of a way to hem without the crease possibly showing when you let them down. Depending on the fabric, it may not be an issue.

The hem is going to have to be deep if you want to save length for letting them down later. If there is no cuff, I would serge the edge so you have no bulk, and then press, baste, and hand hem, or blind stitch if you have access to a blind hemmer.

When you press, be sure to use a cloth to prevent ironing in a shiny surface on the fabric. And depending on how tapered the leg is, you may want to open the side seam a ways to allow your hem edge to lay flat and not pucker your finished hem. If the raw edge of the hem is not as big around as the place where you will sew it to the inside of the pant leg, then it needs to be opened at the seam a bit.

You can always close the seam back up when you lengthen the pants later.

I was in charge of marching band uniforms and we hemmed the pants virtually every year. Follow all of Cincas suggestions. White vinegar will help if the fold wants to show when you let them down. We did press the hems but we didn't press hard. A knife edge was not our friend.

I would just add to all the great advice above to keep the off cuts from the bottom of the pants to create a false hem if needed further down the track. If you leave a 5cm (2 1/2 inches) single layer hem and you have another 5cm saved, you can get the full 5cm benefit of the single layer hem while not having a great thick hem in the meantime if turned up twice. When cutting leave FULL CIRCLES by cutting parallel to the bottom of the legs rather than cutting from the edge UP to the level wanted. Good luck. Rita

I have never hemmed a boy, but I do have sons and have hemmed a lot of pants and jeans.

Still do for suit pants as they come unhemmed.

Cuff the pants and this will give you plenty of extra fabric to let down as needed.
