Hello all I wanted to find out IF I can dye this hat I bought.

Its white and I really like the style but I don't want a white hat.
When I bought it I thought I'd dye it blue or a tanish color.
But since its polyester I can't use regular dye so I was wondering IF maybe I could stain it with something like tea or coffee or blueberries or the like.
Does anyone know if this might work?
Any ideas and suggestions will be Greatly Appreciated.
Don't really want to use an industrial dye so looking for ideas , suggestions etc.
Thanks

Shoot it!

Oh...that kind of dye...

Basically, no. Dyes made for polys tend to be highly chemical and require heat setting. I don't know of any natural dyes that will successfully dye polyester.

Dharma carries iDye for poly in a limited handful of colors, but the dye isn't all that permanent, and may or may not work on your poly.

Dharma is the place to go for dyeing info.

In addition to the iDye LynnRowe pointed you to, it may be possible to paint your hat rather than dye it. Painting can make regular fabric stiff, but hats tend to be stiff to start with.
Dharma on coloring synthetics
I've used the Lumiere and Neopaque paints on some different surfaces, and they're very nice.

I've also used Dye-Na-Flow, which is sort of midway between a dye and a paint, with good results. The instructions for Dye-Na-Flow says it will work on untreated synthetic fabric--you may have to test it on your hat.

Good luck!

I just dyed a stretch lace which definitely wasn't a natural fiber using regular Dylon dye from JoAnn's. I used a deep purple dye and let my fabric soak for 2 hours. After washing the fabric, I got a very pretty pink color on my lace. While not what I wanted, my fabric definitely wasn't white anymore and I can live with pink. I guess I'm telling this example so that you know that unnatural fibers may take the dye, but may not give you the color you want.
