I'm working on Butterick 5319
Butterick 5319

I've never finished it, but I have made this in the past (muslin/actual fabric, but at the time I didn't realize there was an error in the pattern so I gave up), and if I can remember the skirt had so much fabric that it was poofy.
I want to make this a maxi length, so I don't really want too much volume.
I thought about trimming down the side seams of the top layer, but I thought it might be easier to just use the lining pattern piece as a top layer as well.
The lining pattern already is pretty full, but not as much as the top layer.
The lining skirt pieces have darts in both back and front.
Is it possible to just make the darts into a gather?

Cute dress! I take it to mean you mean the darts in the back, right? Sure, darts can be gathers, they can be pleats (as in the front), they can be folds, they can be elastic, or they can be darts in other spots. Just leave the dart unstitched and gather the fabric that is in the center of the dart (between the two vertical lines that make up the dart). If you want the gathers to be a little fuller, slash up the middle of the dart to the dart tip and spread it a little. Don't spread too much because the gathers won't sit against the body and will poof out because they won't have anything to "hold onto" like they do with the bust in front. I'd say at the most another 1-2" of fullness in each back dart you change to gathers and you should be fine.

Thank you!
I accidentally followed the pattrn and cut the lining skirt short, so I might not be able to make the maxi length... (unless I make the lining skirt a tier)
But I'll stii use the lining skirt pattern for the top layer.
I'll probably add just a little to the width.
