I just tried Pandora on my ipad last week again. Now for the really dumb question. After about the first 5-10 songs, they seem to be doing well with my light rock/ballad mix. How long do I have to keep hitting the "like" button?

I rarely hit the like button, but if you go too long without it they will stop playing and you have to click on something to continue.

It depends how picky you are. I have three separate pandora stations, but I am one of those people who are very, very picky. If I have to listen to music I don't like I feel as if I am being assaulted, which is why I don't listen to conventional radio, and why I am such a pain the car. (When my kids were little and I drove they had to listen to my music because I was the driver; when they started driving they had and have to listen to my music because I am the mother, it is a win-win for me.)(DH always listens to what I like partly because he likes a lot of it, and because he has a private vested interest in keeping me happy.)

I can't listen to pandora on the computer because noise from so close hurts my head. Direct TV now has pandora on the television, so I mostly listen while on the computer or sewing, and I try to click like or don't like for everything to help narrow the focus. But, as I say, I am really, really picky.

Well, I must be be pretty picky. The "Country Love Songs" station wants to play a lot of the new country which is A) Not country & B) Not even good rock.

I find the lists that they have set up do not suit me at all. (Pickiness.) I had to devise my stations myself.

One is all opera, and other non-opera songs by opera singers I especially like (including my beloved Juan Diego Florez). (I told DH that the next male cat we get is going to be called Juan Diego.)

One is mostly Baroque and earlier music, and some classical, with opera added in, and a few post-Beethoven pieces, with the exception of the operas nothing post 1900.

My newest one is rock music, mostly starting in the '60's, with the addition of opera, and a capella singing, especially women's voices, with the addition of singers I might like. This is a problem because you are limited to skipping only 6 an hour and the system is not set up properly yet. For example, I like anything by the Four Tops, and almost nothing by the Temptations, but the system thinks they they are both '60's male Motown groups, which they are, but that is not my fault. I also intend to have no instrumental music except for a couple of pieces I especially like (Classical Gas) on this one.

I am really enjoying pandora.

It is nice to be able to customize your own stations. I like both the Tempations & the Four Tops; I do like Classical Gas too. Hmm, I wonder if eventually I can figure out classic soft rock with some good country mixed in, maybe a bit of R&B.

I started using Pandora a few years ago. At first, I totally loved it - especially, customizing my own radio stations (I have about 10!).

Beware, after you like too many songs (not sure, what that number is) you start hearing the same things over and over again. I stopped listening to Pandora because I would hear the same song "literally" (i.e. radio version, album version, extended version, mixed tape version, etc) 3 or 4 times in an hour.

I am glad you said that. I was thinking that I had noticed it on the rock station, which is my newest, and I thought I was imagining things. This for sure does not happen on my Baroque station where even several months later I am getting at least half, maybe more, new tracks.

Of course, this has the longest range, essentially 1000 - 1820, plus a bit to 1900. The earliest pieces to my knowledge are at least those of Hildegard von Bingen who lived from about 1100 - 1180. Some of the Gregorian chants may be older than that. So, lots of time there.

I love Pandora. I've become a member--I can't remember how much it costs but not much--and this allows me to pick a whole list of stations. I have about twenty, I think. I can click like or dislike as many times as I want, and the station keeps playing until I turn it off.

I usually put down a song or artist I like and the station builds around that. Sometimes I'm in the mood for Frank Sinatra, or Broadway hits, or Judy Collins, or lots of others. I even have some children's stations for when my grandhcildren visit.

The fun thing for me is hearing new songs that are similar to ones I've loved for a long time. I've discovered so many songs. I just wish I could get it in my car, as I get tired of the ones on my iPod.

Thank you so much for the tips on using Pandora. I've run into trouble when trying to build some very specific stations and wondered why it quit taking my feedback (too many dislikes) or started playing only the same few pieces over and over (too many likes).

Pandora's algorithms don't seem to work really well for the kinds of music I like. But maybe it's just because I don't know how to use it properly. Any tips on making a station that is very targeted but still has variety would be appreciated!

Maybe I should explain what & why I want that really targeted station. When I am painting, I like to have mood music. So I may want to hear nothing but brass fanfares, or Gregorian chant, or spooky music, depending on what I'm working on. I have a hard time making Pandora understand the characteristics I'm looking for.
