Date: 6/17/12 8:15 PM Very tempted to sew myself a summer maxi dress, very NOT keen to waste a large amount of fabric and find that I look like a whale and have billows of fabric tangling round my shins!
Any favorite styles or patterns? |

Date: 6/17/12 11:05 PM It's been awhile since I made one (and of course I can't find the pattern to tell you the number) but I found that a relatively straightish maxi looks best on me and avoids that about-to-fly-away look. Just remember to leave a side slit to the knee (ask me how I know this, sigh......) ------

Date: 6/18/12 2:59 AM I've lengthened Simplicity 3624 into a maxi-dress before and am about to do another one. That gave sufficient room around my shins to walk normally, but didn't billow out of control. I made it out of a fairly drapy knit, though.

Date: 6/18/12 3:36 AM That dress looks great. I like the coverage on the arms too. I often think of maxi dresses as having spaghetti straps, so I never even think about sewing them. Might have to revisit that idea :) |

Date: 6/18/12 9:24 AM There are 2 other maxi dress discussions going on. On the Fave Maxi Dress Pattern one there was a discussion on lengthening a short dress pattern to a maxi. Now this is a top. Very nice! I suppose any pattern that goes over the hips could be lengthened. Room to move the feet could be accomplished by a vent or slit. I will re-look at any pattern now to see if it could be lengthened as I really love maxi dresses when I am at home. They look nice and are comfortable.
Would love to hear what tips people have to avoid pitfalls in this lengthening process...OK ...I'll start a new thread on this topic ------

As suggested, I've posted a review of this dress in case anyone else wants to use that pattern (or similar) to create their own maxi. It's a bit spotty in areas because I sewed it so long ago, but it's a fairly straight forward process, I think. ------
