is grain just as important as woven?

This might be a really dumb question but I need to ask before I cut into the fabric. I bought some ITY jersey with print that runs from selvage to selvage: ITY fabric image

Would there be any ill effects if I make a garment using the crosswise grain instead of lengthwise grain? I remember reading somewhere on PR that the grain doesn’t matter as much in ITY jerseys. I really hope that’s the case because I really can’t imagine making a top with that pattern running sideways.

Just don't pick a pattern that requires stretch around your body, because ITY doesn't generally have much lengthwise stretch. In this case, you might want to pick a pattern that's for wovens instead of for knits.

I can't answer the question about the advisability of placing a pattern on the crosswise grain of ITY, but I did notice that the pattern on this fabric appears to be a border print, so it must be designed to use that way. Can't imagine any reason it would be printed in a direction that couldn't be used.

I agree with Diane22. It appears it is to be used that way! Beautiful fabric by the way. Where did you purchase it?

I recognize the fountain/pedestal from Fashionista Fabrics:

Falling Leaves Jersey

FYI, she also sells BurdaStyle Magazine single issues and Plus Size vintage patterns.

lakaribane is spot on! I got the fabric at Fashionista Fabrics during Christmas. She had 2 different colors available at the time, the one I linked which has brown leaves and another one with blue leaves.

It didn’t occur to me that this is a border print! I’ve not worked with border prints before...are there specific patterns for them?

Yes, grain is just as important. But you may be confusing being on grain, and the grain direction.

As long as the fabric has enough stretch, you can cut your pattern on the lengthwise grain or the crosswise grain.

But whichever grain you choose, it is important that you are ON GRAIN. Otherwise, your garment won't hang as it should.

So you can be on-grain on the lengthwise grain, or the cross grain, or the bias grain. Hope that helps.
