Date: 6/21/12 1:23 AM After much research primarily on this site I bought a Juki MO734DE serger AND a Brother 2340 cv coverstitch from Ken's online sight unseen.
I've been using a serger for over 20 years and have a coverstitch on my almost new to me Pfaff 4874 purchased 2 years ago, but the latter was not consistently good and as a serger I do not like the upper knife coming from the bottom.
So many of you have said good things about the Brother and I'm not bothered by the tension release thing some don't like. Besides, Sew4Fun has one. That's enough for me!
As for the Juki, I started reading reviews of sergers, started a thread asking what sergers make a perfect rolled hem on sheers and was impressed by this one. The Bernina counterpart is what Sew4Fun has. I trust her judgement. Her work is beautiful and she is fussy. I like that!
So here I am, joyfully anticipating the arrival of these machines some time at the end of next week. It's weird not to have test driven, but the option wasn't available from a dealer whose store I wanted to set foot in. I finally feel like I know the features I want and these machines seem to have them. Doing the happy dance!!

Date: 6/21/12 10:15 AM Congratulations! I am tempted now too by that Coverstitch machine. In your research, did you determine whether the accessory kits are something you need with it?

1 member likes this. Date: 6/21/12 12:29 PM Thanks for your sweet comments. I ordered these at 3:00p.m. Wed., from CA and this morning an email that they are shipped! WOW! I have my 6 year old DGD this week, but next week is open pretty much. What if I get them in time to play next week? Which one should I open first? You don't realize what an occasion this is. I NEVER buy things for myself, but I got a little windfall. Am I excited????
Annie, if you only want to do hems you won't need the accessories. If you want to do binding you need the double fold binder and foot that comes with it. There is also a topstitching foot that has a rudder that acts like a stitch in the ditch foot to coverstitch on top of seams, keeping the stitching lines perfectly centered over the seam. These two items purchased separately cost as much as the difference between ordering only the Brother and ordering it with the bonus kit at Ken's. These 2 items were all I cared about, so the others are a real bonus to me.
I really researched the heck out of these. My brain is dead from it, but I will probably recover when I get them. Will keep you posted! |

Date: 6/21/12 12:41 PM How fun, I sure enjoy getting new machines - - too much really. A coverstitch machine sure would be nice, will it do jeans topstitching? |

Date: 6/21/12 1:07 PM Sew happy for you! I just purchased the Brother Coverstitch machine as well and though I haven't used it much, I really like it so far - and the tension thing really isn't all that annoying at all IMHO.

Date: 6/21/12 1:58 PM Good for you! What fun! It can be a downhill slope though...next it will be another sewing machine....hahahha. I know the feeling - for me it had been 28 years and I had no idea until PR that people even would have more than one machine. Now don't ask me for a head count on my machines please. HAhahha.

Date: 6/21/12 2:42 PM Muffet, when I first joined PR, I posted this http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=52217 . So I know what you mean. This better be it for me or I will have to clean out my studio to accomodate more. |
