Date: 6/24/12 10:38 AM Once again was watching a period piece movie which inspired me to add to my mental "want to make" list. This movie is titled "Cold Comfort Farm" placed in the early twenties. The particular garment I want to make is a simple linen unlined longish coat. There were other nice notables, much linen wear, and some outstanding party clothes. I know that there are many movies/shows out there that get spoken of because of the fashion. How about starting a thread to list our favorites and new ones which we come across. I would definitely watch something based solely on recommendation of inspirational fashions. Or is there already a thread like this, and I am just missing it? |

Date: 6/24/12 6:41 PM "Love Me Tonight" is a delightfully charming musical from 1932 that has a sewing theme and frequently airs on TCM. The movie stars Maurice Chavalet as a Parisian tailor who is forced to impersonate an aristocrat and winds up winning the heart of a beautiful but lonely princess played by Jeannette MacDonald. If In the film's climax, Maurice is required to sew a chic, tailored riding jacket for Jeannette in only two hours. He meets the deadline and eventually gets his princess.

Date: 6/25/12 10:28 AM One of the movies I remember most for absolutely gorgeous clothing was Doris Day's Midnight Lace. The clothes were exquisite, but the lady wearing them was exquisite as well. I think the early 60s fashions were the most beautiful of all time. Lana Turner in Imitation of Life with Sandra Dee also had some gorgeous clothes. I loved the clothes/fashion back then -- definitely not the hodge-podge, look as trashy as you can styles of today. |

Date: 6/25/12 11:32 AM Love love LOVE the wardrobe for "Down With Love," an early 2000s send-up of early 60s Doris Day/Rock Hudson style romantic comedies with Renee Zellweger and a truly dreamy Ewan McGregor. It is unabashedly all about the costuming, which is sensational. ------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com

Date: 6/25/12 12:22 PM I think this is a great idea. I'm going to check out some of these movies. I must say that now that I am sewing clothing I tend to notice the costumes in movies much more. |

Date: 6/25/12 1:09 PM Niagara (1952), with Marilyn Monroe & Joseph Cotten, is a good one too for inspiration (even just a 2 hour vacation). Right now, the one going through my mind is Death on the Nile (1978) with Mia Farrow. |

Date: 6/25/12 1:24 PM I recently watched "The Secret Adversary" , an Agatha Christie story set just after WW1....the clothes were wonderful. I recoginized the basic dress used as very similiar to the One hour dress from the 1924 Book. It was fun to see how they changed it with the trims. It looked wonderful on the actress who was extremely slender. The movie is available on Netflix. ------ 2009-113.25 yds

Date: 6/25/12 2:46 PM I saw this one too, and the costumes were terrific. I am happy to see so good a response, as I intend, or at least would want to check out all the movies mentioned here. I'm on vacation now so should be able to some watching time. -- Edited on 6/25/12 2:50 PM -- |
