I am hemming a strapless gown with a skirt made of acetate taffeta underlined with cotton broadcloth. Total hem circumference is 13.5 feet! Yardage was tight, so there's only enough for a small hem - maybe an inch to spare? I haven't seen it on my customer with the skirt attached yet. I can't see doing just a regular narrow hem since the skirt is underlined. That will make it just too bulky, I think. The skirt will be going over a hoop skirt. (Yes, I measured the length over the hoop!)

Any suggestions?

Could you serge the edge of the taffeta and then fold up one turn and stitch to the broadcloth?

You might try adding widehorsehair braid to the hem. It used to be horsehair, but now is braided polyester. It is sold by the yd and also pkgd. It is sold in bridal supply areas. You need to be careful that your hem treatment does not curl to the rightside and this braid will do it. also it will give the hem some stability and will give a fullness. Without it the skirt may hang limp.

Thanks! I've started by finishing the cut edge of both layers with Seams Great. First time I've used it and I'm impressed with the way it works. Tomorrow I may be looking at horsehair braid. It's a heavy skirt and the last thing I want is a limp hem hanging below all that crispy taffeta.

Here's the dress at final fitting:
Apparently if you right click the broken image and select view image, you will see the picture.

I wish I had an uncluttered place for photos, but the sewing business has expanded to the entire basement.

I'll let you know how the hemming goes. She picks up the finished dress Saturday afternoon.
