My husband, his Mom and I went on a 3 day vacation together to the Oregon Coast. We had a great time and a lot of fun. No, I did not drag them to quilting or fabric stores. I did think about it, though.

On the way home, we went north through Tillamook, and not the normal route we take inland. We wanted to enjoy ourselves just a little longer, so we went home by a different highway. As we got near Tillamook, I began to notice something I did not notice on the way south on Hwy 101. On many barns and buildings are these large quilt designs. Mainly simple blocks, but very interesting. I saw a couple of the blocks on the way down, but many more on the way back. I am guessing I was facing the block design going north toward home and not going south on Hwy 101. Not all are on barns. Taco Time (I think) had a small one on their building.

I could tell what some were, as they are familiar. Some were simple blocks and some were star patterns. I remember seeing a program of Eleanor Burns on Barns Across America, or something like that a few months ago, so I knew some of what I was seeing. I found it wonderful and a lot of fun.

I love to see quilt designs on barns or buildings. We have quiet a lot of them here in Iowa.

They're called Barn Quilts and are about 8' square. A common thing like those metal stars, silhouettes, etc., that people would put in their yards. I have a few near where I live. Here's some info:

If it was not against our HOA, I would put a small one on our house, just for the fun of it.

I got excited when I began to see them, one after another. I recognized only a couple of them, but as we drove past, I looked at the patterns and thought "I'd like to try this one" in a wall hanging. I knew they had them in the Midwest, but in Oregon? Well, Tillamook is farm country, so it makes sense to see them.

Pictures? I never thought of it. The camera was in the trunk, and I can't download from my phone. I wish I had thought of it.

I live in the city and don't have a barn but I am going to make a smaller one to hang on our garage. I have the materials but have yet to settle on what design I want to use?

I suggest you start off with something easy, such as Friendship Star or Nine Patch; anything with a nine patch base. You don't want to get carried away and become frustrated doing something like Flying Geese or Dutchmen's puzzle. I'd like to direct you to Quilter's Cache, which is a website loaded with blocks. I'd suggest you go with a One pin block (as in Easy) and no red pins (those are paper piecing...)

Autumn Tints 2 might work for you; make it out of four pieces of plywood and paint lines for the smaller sections.

This was so neat to look at all these barns with quilt designs on the sides of them.
