used tissue paper to sew knits...now can't get rid of the tissue paper...any suggestions

I am making my sister an infinity dress with a lightweight bamboo jersey and I used a tissue paper underneath the fabric to prevent it from getting sucked under the machine. The stitches are even and beautiful. Where there wasn't a need for much stretch, I used a normal straight stitch and the tissue paper tore right out. On the long straps that wrap around the body I used a zigzag because I figured they would need to stretch some. That tissue paper will not come out. Any ideas? The fabric is black and the tissue is blue and green. So it is super noticeable. I was wondering if I got it wet if it might dissolve...or just make a big mess... Anyone have any ideas I could try? Thanks for any help!

If so, zig zag a good sized scrap using the tissue and see what happens when you wash it. Then I read that the paper is blue and green and I am wondering if this can cause discoloring. I would replicate it on a scrap of the same knit with the same stitch and the same paper and leave this in water and soap. If no discoloring occurs, I would try on the infinity dress. By the way, I love infinity dresses! I think that a zigzag is an appropriate choice for the straps. Which version are you making?

Of course, I do smoke and so it's the plastic from the pack I use on the buttonholes, but it's what I wind up doing to get it all out.

While tissue paper is great for a straight stitch, as you have found, it can be a bear to remove. My suggestion is for the next time you need a stabilizer for a knit. Use Sulky Solvey. It is water soluble and fairly easy to remove. I know this doesn't help for today's problem. . . but maybe next time. ------ Michele Lommasson

I ended up spraying the area with water and giving it 5 minutes, then removed the paper bit by bit with tweezers. Wet paper became very fragile but did not dissolve, which is what I wanted. ------ www.thesewingspace.com

Here is something else to try on your scraps first. Replicate the zigzag on the strap stitching on a scrap. Stretch the fabric like it might be stretched when it is worn. Hoping this might put some breaks in the tissue paper. Use tape to see if it will pick out any of the paper bits. If this works at all, it should work better if one person held the zigzagged area in a stretch out position while the other uses the tape to pull at the paper bits. Play with the tape to see how strong of an adhesion level you can use without disturbing the surface of the fabric. So, you could try regular tape, masking tape, packing tape, etc. If you have to resort to water, try working just a section at a time. Dunk just that section in a sink or container of water and quickly switch to fresh changes of water repeatedly to encourage the tissue paper to bleed out with the hope that the rapid water changes will discourage the dye from migrating and setting in the garment fabric. How wide is this piece of tissue? Is it wide enough to slip a very sticky piece of tape right under the edge of it to give you a good handle to tear it out. You could smooth the tissue towards one side of the seam, lay a short piece of very sticky tape next to seam (sticky side up) then smooth the paper on that side back over the sticky part of the tape. Fold the tape over the top of the paper - but not over the thread in the seam - to securely grab the paper. Try this in short sections to see if it would let you tear out the tissue. Good luck. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.
