I have made lots of pajama and knit pants. But my 12y old needs some shorts and so I want to attempt to actually sew regular woven shorts with a front fly. We chose to use and Ottobre pattern and shorten it. I copied the pattern and read the fly zipper construction explanation in that Ottobre issue, but there is on thing that I still don't understand completely. Do I understand that the fly facing is part of the pattern? But should it be there on both left and right side of pants? Or should I cut it only on the one side that will end up on top?

This is the part I am talking about:

Thank you for your input. Also is there maybe a good online tutorial for first time fly zipper construction? Thank you.

Another vote for Sandra Betzina's method. I always get a good result using her method.

If you sew a cut on fly front you cut both sides the same, but depending on how you make it, you fold back the underlap side 5/8" from the front. Marking both the cf and back 5/8" with a notch so that you can line up the cf fold later. I don't use Betzina's method of basting the cf, but they are easy instructions and a good starting point.

Thank you for the advice and the links. I think I am starting to understand. I am sure it it will become clearer once I start sewing it. I'll keep you updated. I just wanted to make sure I cut it right in the first place. Because all the pants we have at home that I examined have a sewn on facing and nothing on the other side.

Lena, that's interesting. I've never attached the zipper to the shield first. This method makes better sense than attaching the shield, after zipper is attached to the front left of the garment.

I rarely use this "real" fly method anymore.
