Do you think it looks weird if a welt pocket bisects a dart in the back of pants?

I need a longish dart in my pants at the back. I thought I'd put a welt pocket on each side of the pants back. If I put the welt below the dart it will be far too low. It must bisect the dart. Even with the flap I'm planning the end of the dart will show below the flap that will cover the welt.

Oh, and do you think it looks weird if the dart is not in the centre of the welt? The dart is closer to CB but the welt will be pretty well centred width wise between CB and SS.

I think it would be fine. After all, seams and darts cross welt pockets on jackets all the time.

I've seen it done. I like a little 'architecture' in clothing as long as it is well executed. Be sure that the angles of the darts coming off of the bottom welts are symmetrical.

And, see if you can place the welts so that the dart below the welt is somewhat proportional and near to (or less than) the length that a patch pocket might be.

I do think it would be a little strange looking if there were miles and miles of dart below the welt looking like you had a sword attached to each side of your bottom. (an exaggerated comparison, but I'm sure you get the idea)

As an added thought, angle the dart to you advantage since it will be a feature. Perhaps perpindicular to the pocket, perhaps at a different angle.

On my 1x bottom, I would try to place the darts so that the bottom point of the dart was towards the outside. And, if the dart was slanted I would then have the top of the dart slanted in towards the center back. I would not reverse that angle as it would give the visual that my waist was as big or bigger than my hips.

Check out your own rear view and take best advantage of the visual lines you are creating.

Since this is exactly how I pictured it when I read your subject line, I'd think that would look a lot LESS weird than a dart centered through the pocket, or worse--the pockets moved off center to accommodate the dart.

LOL, well, the pockets are on. Turns out the flap does cover all the dart after all. I shaped them to accommodate some piping, making them rounded and the bottom covers the tip of the dart. Actually, they are so round they look like smiles. Two buttons instead of just one and I could have a happy face butt. :)

And, too late for the last comment. I centred the pockets on the the dart after all. That's why the dart is now completely covered, because the deepest part of the flap is at the dart. I checked out some of my husband's ready to wear pants and they have the dart bisecting the middle of th pocket and it really does not look weird at all to have a little more pants on the SS side of the pocket flap than on the CB side.

Will see if I can post a pic when the pants, capris actually, are done. Ah, I can just imagine it, you are all holding your breath in anticipation of a photo of my backside. LOL, NOT, I bet. :)

No, because this is what Liz Claiborne does with her pants designs. Also, the last few pages of Pants For Real People shows these very pockets and Liz' name next to them.

I've done them on my own corduroys--skirt, pants or jeans, and I really like the look.

Here they are, my happy face butt pockets. Sorry the photos are not good enough for me to zoom you into the details. They are full men's wear type pockets, with double welts and the flap coming out below the top welt. I'm pleased with how they turned out, I've done welts but never put a flap in before. They have some small boo boos but the flap covers them up.

Doubt you can see the dart but it is right smack dab in the middle of the flap and reaches to a couple of millimetres of the bottom of the flap.

Thanks stirswaterblue!

Longblades - too cute! It would have been a terrible shame had you not given these a try. Really, really nice.
