Lately my bobbin has been shaking a lot, particularly when the thread is getting low. It's a minor annoyance and seems to have caused a bit of thread nesting on occasion. Does this happen a lot?

Not sure why that is happening in your case but I used to use a "bobbin star" in my Singer 600 WI when my bobbin would spin a bit to fast at times and cause inconsistent tension. It worked quite well.

It was just a very thin piece of metal shaped like a star that would fit into the bobbin case before the bobbin. It had just enough spring to the shape so that it would apply a tiny bit of pressure to the bobbin and not allow it to spin too fast.

My Brother machine came with a different version of the same thing, already installed in the bobbin case.

When was the last time you cleaned the bobbin case and shuttle?

Refer to the maintenance section of the manual for your machine.

Cleaning the bobbin case and shuttle was the first thought that popped into my mind too.

A second thought....Could your bobbin be wound unevenly? That will make a bobbin mess up every time on every machine.

I agree with everyone else. Maybe a good cleaning. Do you have the right size bobbin? I ask because I have had several machines with similar bobbin and bobbins can look alot alike.

I bought a Janome from an online store that was horrible about doing that. It got so bad It wouldn't sew, the bobin would jump then the nesting. I took it to the dealer twice within 6 months and finally bought my Janome DC 3050. I have been very leary of on line purchases of sewing machines ever since.

If it's happening when the bobbin is low maybe it's because the thread tail is getting caught up with the bobbin thread as it unwinds...I've had that happen.

What I do now is, when winding the bobbin I pass the thread through the little hole as normal, then I poke it all the way through the centre of the bobbin and then put it on the bobbin winding spindle with the thread tail poking up through the centre of the bobbin. I trim that off before winding. Then, when the bobbin is wound I trim the thread back to the bobbin hole as normal and when you put the bobbin into the bobbin holder that thread tail will be the opposite side to where the thread unwinds from (make sense??..not sure it does to me when I read it...lol). If it's a top loading bobbin the thread tail will be at the bottom. Anyway, I haven't had any tails getting caught when the bobbin gets low since doing this.

Thank you all, for every suggestion. It's almost exactly as missticky2 put it. The tail of the thread is getting caught. I just wound another bobbin and was very careful to make sure it was even. Often I wind it fast and it can look kinda sloppy.
