Fabricmart has finally put their leather skins on sale and I want to order some. I am thinking of making a jacket that calls for 1.5 yards of 57 inch fabric. It is Burda Style 2-2012-101. How much leather would I need? The leather skin I am looking at is an average of 6.2 square feet. Do you think I should just get 5 skins to be safe or is that enough?

There is a formula for changing yardage to sq. ft. Here's a link to the Fashion Incubator's calculationsThe Fashion Incubator

The formula for area is:
Area = Length * Width
But first you need to compare like units. I converted yards to feet.
1.5 yards x 57" = 54' x 57" =
4.5 feet x 4.75 feet = 21.38 square feet
If each skin is 6.2 square feet and you require 21.38 square feet, you will need four skins. You will need to take into account the actual width and length of the skins relative to your pattern piece sizes to assure that you have enough

I would definitely get 5...always err on the side of too much ...There are often flaws in leather, that you will want to avoid, and you could always make accessories out of any leftovers.

Given that, IMO, you're not talking about a paltry order, maybe FM would be able to look at inventory for you and give you a better idea of what you'll be getting. Give them a call?
