Help in understanding something from Vogue Sewing

I'm reading about buttonholes in Vogue Sewing. I do not understand the following: Begin all horizontal buttonholes 1/8" to the side of the buttons nearest the closing edge to allow for the natural tendency of the garment to "pull" away from the closing. Could someone please interpret this in a way that I can understand it? Thanks in advance.

The way I've always read how to do it: the button goes on the center front line; the buttonhole begins 1/8" (slightly more if a huge button) from the cf, measuring that 1/8" closer to the garment's edge. ------ I have not yet begun to procrastinate

There is a center line where you place your buttons down the front of the placate. If you are doing a horizontal buttonhole, start the end of the buttonhole (the end that is closest to the front opening of the shirt) just 1/8" past that center line, in the direction closest to the opening. Date: 7/18/12 6:38 PM Alternatively, you can do what I have been known to do: put on the garment, adjust to fit and hang well, mark the placement of the middle buttonhole with a pin (the one in line with bust), and then measure to the edge. Use this number to arrange all the others, or just eyeball it. Sew buttonholes completely disregarding instructions, suggested placement, home ec rules, etc... Date: 7/18/12 9:57 PM You know, that is such good advice, too....finding the location for the button which will be in line with your bust line. It can really save some heartache down the road when I find my blouse is gapping, even though the fit is good. Glad you brought that up.

Thanks also for the reminder about the buttonhole at the bust line, AND the info about the Simflex Expanding Gauge. I've written the instructions in the margin of the book. And added the gauge to my list of things to buy.

First I try the blouse on and mark the most important button (e.g. over the widest part of the chest). Then I lay an existing blouse over my new shirt and use the blouse's button holes to mark the new ones with a pencil.
