I am considering between Bernina 830 and the BabyLock Ellisimo Gold.
I have the Bernina 830 & would be trading it for the Ellisimo Gold as I doubt I can talk my wonderful better half into letting me have both! :)

I mostly sew (including lots of patching & hemming, etc.) and my favorite thing - embroidery. I have not even tried free motion quilting.

The Ellisimo Gold appeals to me because I'm such a geek.
The Ellisimo Gold's interface is more how I think, so more intuitive to me; the digitizing tablet (I already carry a Wacom tablet around in my laptop bag); the major feature that I want is that spectacular NeedleCam.

The Bernina 830 has the stitch width to 9mm & length to 6mm; differential feed; and larger embroidery hoops & 12" harp space.

I wish the Bernina folks would follow the international guidelines for interface colors or let us have more choices of our own background color scheme, sometimes their display interface colors make my migraines & eye strain worse.
I deal w/ computers a lot, so this is a big issue for me.

I like the hemmer feet available for the Bernina, it saves my hands cramping. I have an injury that has given me some arthritis issues (you'd think I was ancient or my warranty expired, just a rough life! lol.). But, the NeedleCam on the Ellisimo Gold helping to straighten out my stitches would be wonderful.

I've had my Bernina 830 for over a year & we just have not bonded as well as I had hoped. I'm stuck in a town w/ no lady friends or family. So, I'm throwing myself on the mercy of you lovely ladies here at PR for some virtual friendly advice!

Any ideas? suggestions? opinions?
Anyone have experience with both who could give me their opinions?
Is it just my geek side thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the fence?

Thanks so much!

I only own the 830LE. But I have a friend with both machines. The Elissimo is easier to use--more intuitive, but not as flexible. You have choices that you can pick from--and then sew/embroider with those choices. With the Bernina you have a lot more flexibility to have it do exactly what you want, but that makes it fiddlier and not as user friendly--you have to be willing to play with all of the options to get what you want.

I think they are both excellent machines. If you have not bonded with the 830, then I think switching to the Elissimo is a great option.

I am also a techie--and I understand what you are saying about the interface colors. I wish the screen on my 830 was better.

Can you go and play on an Elissimo to see if it speaks to you? My friend that has both prefers the Bernina--but that is because she likes having that level of control. I know there are people who also love/prefer the babylock.

Good luck!

I have the Ellisimo Gold and I love it. I had the chance to use the Bernina 830 at an Anita Goodesign in Feb. and I was very glad that I chose the Ellisimo. I'm sure if you got used to the Bernina machine it would be very nice, but I found the Ellisimo much more user friendly. The very best feature on the Ellisimo is the ability to scan the hoop with the camera for perfect embroidery placement. There are so many nice features , but the scanning feature of the Ellisimo is something I couldn't live without now that I have it.

Topshelf,

It is that NeedleCam with the scanning that keeps drawing me to the Ellisimo Gold so much. It is just such an incredible feature!

Every time I visit my BL dealer I play with the EG...amazing machine! Aside from the camera, I LOVE how it does stitching precisely from the edge whatever distance you set. I can't remember the term, my mind is rather jumbled up lately with several machines all mixed in together, but the things Betty, my BL dealer, can make that EG do is astounding.

Most of all, I heart Woo (HimmyCat). Until we meet again, my beautiful little boy. I love you.

For me, with ALL THE FEATURED ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE BERNINA 830, (it's like there isn't anyone else using other TOL machines than the 830,- it's becoming boring), with all the ticklish, sensitivities I'm reading about the 830 from PR'rs, I'm strongly thinking the Ellisimo Gold is a better option. Since you have and worked with the 830, see how you'll fit with the Gold. Sometimes because we're used to something, bonding may not be right away. But if you're willing to go with another sm and not be beholdin' then consider the Gold. I believe there are other TOL sm's beside the 830 and I would personally like to see more featured Active Disussions on them. I'm not against Berninas, I'm just tired of just reading about them in the active discussion feature on the homepage of PR. Wish other users of TOL sm's would post in discussions to even out the game.

Be brave, take a chance with something new - go for the Gold!

I've no dog in this fight but from what I've been able to learn from a distance it seems to me at least that the EG is heavily weighted toward the embroidery side while the 830 leans to sewing.
Your perspective may be different, of course.

I love the brother/babylock products and thought that was the only way I was going. I have seriously considered the Brother Quattro (only cuz of Disney fun) which is the similar cousin of the Ellisimo. I have seen both in action. It is amazing

But, I have changed my first choice to the Viking Designer Ruby or Diamond Deluxe because the HUGE size of the Ellisimo is just too much for me. I think the Viking Designer Diamond deluxe is more across the board comparable to the Ellisimo model wise.

The Bernina 830 was an absolute Tank compared to the Quattro/Ellisimo. I just can't get over how large it is. The screen and ease of use of the Ellisimo over the Bernina seems to be no comparison. .

It is such a hard decision with these nice machines. I fell in love the features and the way the screen menu works, the ability to drag and drop the design wherever you want, on the Viking Designer ruby and Designer Diamond Deluxe. But am leaning to the Ruby because it is really does all I need. The test stitching I have done on it is fantastic.

The screen on the Ellisimo is amazing and the scanned photo of the hoop area on the design screen feature is awesome for placing your embroidery design.

The 830's are definitely tanks as far as weight & size! I have a vintage cast metal 1946 Singer 201 that weighs several pounds less. Who needs weightlifting classes!
I have a rather large craft desk for the Bernina 830 & embroidery unit at home, but often forget just exactly how large it is until I lug it somewhere, such as to my mother's house. We had to clear off the entire table & it was still a tight squeeze.

Sounds like you found your next machine!

I just keep thinking of my 9mm zig-zag & differential feed vs that incredible NeedleCam!
