I'm trying to do a pleated tulle bodice overlay, but I'm not sure if tulle has a grain the same way a normal woven fabric would. Do I need to cut and pleat on the bias or can the pieces be cut on the straight grain? I'm using Simplicity 3878 and adjusting to have a sweetheart neckline--I'd like for the tulle pieces to kind of wrap diagonally in a criss cross across the bodice rather than the plain horizontal gathers in the pattern.

I have no idea, but if I were you I'd test the tulle both ways. (Just pleating and draping it, but necessarily sewing samples.)

Is it nylon tulle or silk tulle?

It's nylon tulle.

To check for the grain, tug on a piece to see if it stretches or not. For example, cut a square out of the tulle. Then tug up and down, then across the top. Whichever direction that doesn't stretch is the straight grain. This is how I find grainlines on my quilting fabric strips.

So... what did you end up doing?
I'm working on a similar project with tulle...
Thanks.
