Date: 7/27/12 11:49 AM From my experience with IKEA somethings are great otherthings are junk. A friend bought the office furniture years ago and it has held up really well. They dont sell that line anymore. It was more expensive then their other furniture. I think you have to be careful about what you buy. If its super cheap there is a reason for it. I would tend to their more expensive products. Like the cube shelving is really strong. The Billy book cases, when you put a lot of weight on them, the shelves will bend. I bought the metal helmes filing cabinet and after spending two hours putting it tog.
(carefully) realized it was not worth the money I paid for it.
If you buy anything with draws check out the bottoms some of them are really flimsy. HTH. ------

Date: 7/27/12 11:49 AM I was skeptical, but mine has held up beautifully even after a rough move! I have the Norden gateleg table,the Alex drawer unit which is great for thread, the Hemnes glass door cabinet (made from real wood), and two Jules chairs. For the price and style I've been very happy.
That said, I did splurge and get a solid maple sewing machine cabinet custom made from Gristmill, that cost the same or less than the expensive particle board cabinets. ------

Date: 7/27/12 11:55 AM Yes the Gristmill sewing cabinet is beautiful, and well worth the money. Which machine do you have in yours? I have a Bernina which is front loading. My hesitation has been that the bobbin would be difficult to get to without having to bring it all the way up to the height of the desk top. I think that would be kind of a pain. Basically on all the tables except for the platform models of the other custom sewing table manufacturer called Unique Sewing Furniture, that seems to be the case. ------

Date: 7/27/12 1:20 PM I have my Bernina 830 in it. I modeled my cabinet on the Bernina white sewing cabinet. I eliminated the front doors and panel in the front so my knee lifter works easily. I also added an electric lift, but I think that was overkill as I don't raise and lower it unless I'm embroidering. If I remove the insert, I can load the boobin without raising the machine. ------

Date: 7/27/12 3:33 PM I have a lot of IKEA's 'Billy' cabinets loaded with stuff in my sewing room (both standing and hanging cabinets), and they have proved to be quite sturdy. There were a couple of cases when we had to reinforce shelves that wanted to bow under heavy loads of books, but that was easy to fix.
Actually, I'm delighted we went to IKEA for this. |

Date: 7/27/12 5:50 PM Most things from Ikea are pretty good, but you do have to be careful. As someone mentioned above if the drawer bottoms or shelf bottoms are flimsy, BEWARE! But if you're careful, a lot of their stuff can be really good.
I have several pieces of Hemnes furniture from them and they are really good quality and quite sturdy.
I'm probably going to be buying more soon too! ------

Date: 7/27/12 6:01 PM The Expedit workstation is really sturdy. The Laiva desk (cheap!) is worth its price, holds my laptop, Fashionmate, or serger, but the only thing I'd keep on it if I'm not right thereis the laptop. Still, it serves its purpose. |

Date: 7/27/12 6:40 PM Most of my sewing storage is from Ikea. I have an Antonius wire basket rack to hold notions, interfacings, etc - I think I bought it about 15 years ago and it has been moved back and forth across the country. On the last move, one section of metal did finally snap off when something really heavy fell on it during transit, but it is actually still useable.
My shelving is mostly from the older Ivar series, they still have some of the components available. Ivar is all wood, and is modular so you can build different configurations. It has held up for 13+ years, and the modular design has been really great because I have lived in 5 different houses during that time, and used different configurations each time. Right now, the tall shelving unit hold my fabric stash (really heavy!) , fiber stash, patterns, and various supplies. It does help to use the anchors to attach it to the wall if you are storing heavy stuff, especially for the skinnier shelf size. I like to treat these unfinished wood items with tung oil when I buy them, the wood mellows and turns golden as it ages. I've also used Ivar as a bookshelf (really heavy) for years, with no problems. ------

Date: 7/27/12 6:44 PM I cannot recommend highly enough EXPEDIT bookshelves, ie the 5 by 5 one. The shelves are sturdy, survive moves, hold tons of fabric, notions, books, pattern magazines etc without any problems - and I just love their simple but classic design. ------
