MCNY Collections Exhibit

Worth/Mainbocher: Demystifying the Haute Couture

he Museum of the City of New York presents this FABULOUS online exhibit of 100 years of beautiful dresses. Warning: prepare to spend some time looking at each garment and learning about it's history, fabrics and construction. Be sure to click on the little magnifying glass icons to see close-ups of the details. Fascinating!

What a wonderful exhibit. I love the way you can zoom in and look at the details.
I wonder how much some of the Worth gowns cost?

I thought the notes on the Mainbochers not being lined was very interesting: The absence of a lining is typical in couture dressmaking, as the lining might cause an unwanted pull or wrinkle on the dress. Instead, the raw edges of the seams and hems are hand-overcast to prevent raveling.
