My mother's husband passed away earlier this year.

I wanted to create some pillows from his ties for his adult children. The ties are all silk (and in great condition - most were only worn a few times.) Small prints. No stripes. No plaids. No plain colors.

I wanted to be sure of the pattern before I start cutting into the ties - as there is a limit to the amount of fabric there.

Searching for inspiration on the web has not yet identified "the right pattern". There was a Dresden Plate from ties that was nice, but would not fit with the more urban/modern decor. The same is true of Crazy Quilting - which had been my first choice.

I am toying with this pattern, but may be drawn to it simply because it uses the masculine color scheme.



So, I am find myself appealing to the collective knowledge for suggestions. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

There's a great book by Shirley Botsford called Daddy's Ties that might give you some ideas. I love to work with ties--the fabric is usually so luxurious.

I think I saw one done in a tumbler pattern or equilateral triangles just top to bottom in rows. You would get alot out of the fabric that way depending on size of triangle or tumbler used. I think it was an old fons and porter magazine. I was suprised at how modern it can look depending on fabric.

How about a log cabin/string quilt design? You could probably get some nice long strips out of the ties, and each tie could be used in several blocks.

Finished the quilt top piecing - can't decide to border or not. If I had the right red, I would, but alas! No right red in The Stash.

It took a few tries to get the pinwheels a pleasing size. They were originally twice this size - and the result was less than hoped for.
I did take pictures as I put it together and so have posted a tutorial at The Destashification Project
