I went to a bridal shower in South beach, and found myself surrounded by floaty dress styles and maxi dresses of which I have NONE. I went in a lightweight silk plaid pencil skirt in a light green color with a white broderie anglaise button front shirt and white sandals and looked like a poster child for tailored clothing.

I've lived up north most of my life, and in tailored clothing when I worked, so now I need to find at least one dress pattern to wear that is not tailored or fitted but suitable for a tropical climate.

What are you wearing this summer that fits the bill?

A sleeveless shirtwaist dress, or an A-line maxi dress?

I like the Maxi also...aren't those shirtdresses what you are trying to get away from? They look very tailored and fitted to me.
Go for the Maxi and cardi!

LOL.... see? I can't even get out of my own way. I really like the pattern on the maxi, and if I saw it for sale I wouldn't buy it, but made up it looks fabulous.

I think we all do the same thing..After hanging out by the law offices downtown, I realized that I'm trying to make all pants fit me like jeans! After wearing them daily for years, it's what I'm comfortable in and what feels right.

Go look for that Maxi pattern and figure out how to do the hem..that's what take it out of the Target/Kohls level for me....

I vote for the maxi + cropped cardi too but NOT matching. Maybe a print for the maxi and a solid cardi in one of the [lighter] colors of the maxi's print.

As for the hem, I remember cleary a Burda of the late 80s (?) that showed how to make a skirt with a hip yoke and a circle skirt that you cut out of your fabric folded like a man's handkerchief, so you had points all around.

Is that clear?

[Reminder (for those who don't know yet, of course) to make a circle skirt you fold selvedge against selvedge, then top and botton together. Then you mark the radius of your waist circumference and hem from the double-folded corner. ]

In this case, you would leave the corner opposite the waist circle. That would become your side points in the finished skirt.

The Textile Studio Barcelona Dress has been favorably reviewed here several times. In sheer fabrics, it looks cool and airy, and the hem points can be modified to your taste.

I agree, the cardi crop will not match. Although I don't think this version has another seam, it looks like a front piece and back piece on the NM website. I don't see any seaming (although the print is busy enough to hide it.

I think I'm going to try and drape it. Oh this should be fun.
