Pin Cushion I'd love to make one...

They were made from wool felt on the bottom with quilted tops that were embellished with deco stitches and little handmade flowers and tiny wooden buttons. I wouldn't have any idea how to begin to re-create the design so I wonder if there's a craft book somewhere that would get me started. I was looking for a blog I've read that focuses on the pincushions. She finds ceramic items and makes them into pincushions. I'm sure someone here is familiar with it...... Then, I made the mistake of clicking on a few links... I just found a justification for buying those expensive, yet teentiny cans of wet cat food! CUUUUUTE!

But I could never bring myself to actually stick pins in it! (It would seem a bit gruesome!) When I was looking to make a couple, I browsed Pinterest for tutorials. Here are a couple I made from scraps: They're just two circles of fabric, stuffed with crushed walnut hulls (? something like that?) and wrapped with embroidery floss. Clearly I need to work on my circle-closing technique, but they turned out OK. ------ ~Gem in the prairie

Gem, yours are wonderful! Please post more about walnut shell stuffing. I just SEARCHED it out: finely ground walnut shells are a safe alternative to emery powder, it sharpens and oils the pins nicely, and can be purchased at pet stores as reptile bedding. -- Edited on 8/2/12 1:42 PM --

Reading some of the details of the pincushions listed on Etsy I see that there are a lot of different kinds of fill that's used. I prefer something heavier so would go with the metal shavings or salt or some kind of seeds (walnut shells?, I'll have to look into that).
