Will vinegar work for removing the fabric finishing smells?

They have that dry cleaning smell, not musty. I remember years back when you entered a fabric store and the smell of finishing in the fabrics would hit you, sometimes make your eyes water to stay in the store. I assume these were processed in the US then. What do you use? I have heard just sunshine works? I have washed some already, mostly knits, but the imbedded smell comes back when you iron. Several years ago, I bought a black knit fabric that stank. Several washings later, it still smelled, so I tossed it.
