Subject: Should I put my money on a Baby Lock Evolution or two seperate serger and coverstitch machines? Date: 8/7/12 9:00 PM I have found a good dealer selling a floor model Baby Lock Evolution serger for around $2,000 and I am very tempted. I recently upgraded an old Brother sewing machine to the Baby Lock Ellisimo and have been so blown away in love that I am ready to invest in a serger and leaning toward the Evolution if the experience will be anywhere near as wonderful as with the Ellisimo. However, I am somewhat new to the serging world, and have seen a lot of threads strongly reccomending purchasing two seperate machines for serging and coverstitching, and I understand that switching between the two features can be tricky on most combo machines. Can anyone advise whether that would still be an issue with the Evolution? My focus is on garments, especially lingerie sewing. Thanks, guys! -- Edited on 8/7/12 9:01 PM -- |

Date: 8/7/12 9:04 PM I totally understand the ease of having two machines set up so you don't have to switch at all--if you have the space. That said, I only have the evolution and LOVE IT! It is fast and easy to change out. I don't mind at all. Because of the air threading it is really fast--and I love using the evolution. $2000 is an excellent price and I personally would jump on that.

Date: 8/7/12 9:12 PM I was looking for a new coverstitch machine and I was facing the same thing, deciding to stay with having separate machines or go with the Evolution. I ended up buying the Enlighten serger and the BL coverstitch. I am very happy with my decision, the Enlighten is a fantastic machine. The Evolution seems easy to switch over but I think if you are doing a fair amount of coverstitching and don't think you will need the five thread capability, it may be the way to go. The turning radius on the Enlighten is very good and I really like the needle threader which they can't put on a combo machine. Either way you can't go wrong with a Babylock serger! ------ Viking D1, 1+, Pfaff 7570, Singer 503 Rocketeer, 66, 15-91, Featherweight 5 Flock, Babylock Enlighten & Coverstitch and Pfaff Creative Performance |

Date: 8/7/12 9:19 PM I'm now so spoiled with my evolution that if I did get a separate coverstitch machine it would only be the babylock! ------ Berninas 830LE ♥ Artista 630PQE ♥ 930 Record ♥ Juki TL2010Q ♥ Pfaffs Creative Performance ♥ Passport 2.0 ♥ Singers 221 ♥ 301 ♥ 500a ♥ Kenmore 1040 ♥ Elna 'Grasshopper' ♥ Tacsew T500 ♥ Babylock Evolution |

Date: 8/7/12 9:24 PM Yes, they do make a fantastic machine! I came close to buying the Evolution after I bought the coverstitch but decided that I really didn't need to spend the extra money. The Evo is such a cool looking machine though! Have you used the 8 thread capability? I was wondering what that would be used for. ------ Viking D1, 1+, Pfaff 7570, Singer 503 Rocketeer, 66, 15-91, Featherweight 5 Flock, Babylock Enlighten & Coverstitch and Pfaff Creative Performance |

Date: 8/7/12 9:31 PM I've only used the 8 thread in class for playing. It really is overkill, but you can get some cool effects! ------ Berninas 830LE ♥ Artista 630PQE ♥ 930 Record ♥ Juki TL2010Q ♥ Pfaffs Creative Performance ♥ Passport 2.0 ♥ Singers 221 ♥ 301 ♥ 500a ♥ Kenmore 1040 ♥ Elna 'Grasshopper' ♥ Tacsew T500 ♥ Babylock Evolution |

Date: 8/8/12 1:34 AM I also own the Evolution and really love the ease of all the features. With anything, it takes practice to switch easily from serging to coverstitch, but after 2 to 3 times, it is easy. The machine does something like 87 different combination stitches. I have not used the 8 thread as yet, but understand it is for decorative and heavy duty 5/8 seams. I love the wave stitch and the ability to do elastic and ruffling as well (plus cording). Great!!! This is my third serger and by far the best. I find that I use it so much more than I ever did my other sergers. It's fun and easy(threading is simple). Oh and one of the best features - no tensions to mess with!!! My sewing room is small and I have my Evolution on one table and my Ellisimo Gold and computer on another table. Because of the ease of the Evolution -don't find the need to have a separate machine for coverstitching. I sew on knits/fleece alot -- hopefully this helps! |

Date: 8/8/12 8:38 AM I have the Evolution and a Janome 644D serger that I kept when I bought the BL. My intention was to use the Evolution primarily for coverstitch and chainstitching and then use the Janome for overlocking. Well, the BL is such a pleasure to use that I rarely use the Janome, although it really does a very, very nice job.
I just can't get over my love of the Jet-Air threading and auto tensioning!
For $2000 for the Evolution I'd also jump on the deal! ------ Linda

Date: 8/8/12 8:52 AM An Evolution for 2k? From a dealer? With a warranty? I'd buy it without hesitation, that's a real deal! My dealer won't go lower than $3400, I've tried! |
